Only in Their Dreams
Is it possible, that the little song bird,
dreams of soaring and flying,
when he looks towards the sunset on the horizon
and sees those pelicans barely flapping,
gliding so close to the waves,
the spray painting their plumes
in tiny drops and crystals?
Skimming the whip-cream whitecaps,
off the rolling tides of azure,
in their clock-tick formation ,
each flaps again until they synchronize as one.
There are some things the little song bird can never be…
maybe only in his dreams.
It was the muti-toned song of the robin,
that always woke him,
in the hours between day and night.
Did he wish he could sing like that,
in the quiet darkness before the dawn?
As he surveyed the others,
the rocks still cool, in the early morning sun,
the gentle lapping of the waves;
he passed the oil over his feathers,
one at a time, letting each slip through his beak,
while his belly rumbled with the hunger of the morning.
He stood up and flapped his oiled wings; it was time.
Being the leader, he took off first,
the others finding their places behind,
the ocean swelling up and down below them.
Dipping down as one, almost touching the surface,
he thought no more about singing like a robin….
maybe only in his dreams.
As she was writing and riding the rapids
of a thought that comes so quickly,
she realized any one of these poems
she would sign might be her last.
Would her running trail of poetry, end on love or tragedy,
or refer to life and death?
Mortality was the song that played in the background,
everywhere she looked or went,
but the sun shone bright,
her laughter was filled with gratitude
and love was still close by.
Every word she wrote only came close,
to what she really wanted to say,
and as she began to wind down, her days much shorter;
she still sang and flew majestically,
but only in her poetry….
and only in her dreams.

Beautiful and poignant… Longing everywhere, and everywhere the approach of endings. So good that we have dreams… and poetry. Thank you, yet again, for sharing this!

Ohh Dale, thank you so much…yes, as you know these thoughts were born from music (once again) and the music is very poignant, wistful, wanting.. Yes, we live in reality, but we dream, and there is poetry..and Life is good:)

Oh, I so love dreaming the dreams, and the connection between the dreams of nature and the dreams of poetry. One and the same, we all are. A beautiful poem, Karima.

Thank you so much Jeff for liking this one. The style is a little different for me, but that’s just the way it wanted to come out . I’m very happy you felt that connection. 🙏❤️🌸

It’s so beautiful to dream and to sketch our dreamworld through poetry is precious and the immense pleasure we feel through writing is just out of the world. No matter how tricky life is, you can always find peace and happiness dreaming your own illusionary space. This is so poignant habeebity, beautiful just beautiful ❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗

Aww UmAnzar, I always love your comments as you know ❤️ you dive right into my current and let yourself be swept away. You know sometimes poetry, for me, is like dreaming wide awake! There is something so similar and intuitive and what fun to think that all of Nature dreams, has desires but in the end, is happy to be just as Allah has made him, a songbird, a sea gliding pelican, a poet contemplating her life. Hugs you thank you for seeing so deeply into what I wrote.. you have inspired new thoughts and dreams in me. 🙏❤️😘🌸🤗💐

Aww.. This was just beautiful, Karima. I love how you described the birds, then dreams… And then ended with thoughts on poetry. So heavenly. There’s a beautiful way in which you write which I can’t help but feel proud. Not all poems are easily understood by all, but yours…I immediately feel and can relate to.
Stay blessed my dear Karima. Much love and hugs to you🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️💐💐🌹🎁💗💗💗

Lovely: “whip-cream whitecap”; “clock-tick formation”; “rolling tides of azure”. And you got it right about the words not coming out completely the same as we envision them. It’s one of the hardest things to cope with as a writer, I think.

Thank you Benjamin, glad you liked those little descriptions. I grew up alongside the seashore and watched the pelicans for hours. They always enthralled and amazed me, such graceful fishing fleets skimming the waves in formation. Yes as poets we sometimes come close to conveying what we mean, but poetry like language itself many times falls short. Thank you again, for your great comment!

You’re welcome. The seashore sounds like the perfect place to create poetry and memories. Sounds wonderful. And language does come close to our feelings but still a bit removed from them.

It was an idyllic place to grow up in…and probably I am a poet and became such an avid reader because of the remote quality and no electricity… Thank you my friend for all your lovely comments.. I owe you a visit to your page, very soon:)

That makes sense. That would surely help turn one to words. Your childhood sounds very interesting. I like hearing about it here and there over these discussions. It sounds like a great setting for a story (novel).

Ohhh. Miss Karima!! This is so heartfelt. My humble comment can’t touch how this piece makes me feel. I have watched pelicans cruise the tops of waves all my life. And never have I read the eloquence of your description. And thoughts of birds?! Only you! And lastly, a theme you often visit. Mortality. And you always seem to do so in a cheerful, fearless manner. Your poetry will be here long after we are gone. An anthology please!!

Thank you thank you Hoyt, I know how much time you spend by the sea, and how well you know their grace and perfection…on the other end of the scale hehe…how totally classless and unruly are the seagulls!! They are the “machine-munchers” of the sea 🙂

Ahh. Beautiful. I heard the sound when they flapped before synchronising again in their formation wind ruffling their feathers. I felt the spray of ocean. And it made me blissfully sad to read the last three lines… only in her dreams, and poetry… 🍀🍀🍀
