Lie To Me

Lie To Me

to the music of Chris Issak, “Lie to Me”

A long time ago, I sat in an airplane
in the days of the iPod,
my marriage dissolving into the clouds
trailing like a tail on the jet stream.
I was going West and leaving my heartache behind
listening to Chris Isaak’s “Lie To Me;”
I cried all the way home.

I flew to the refuge of colored birds,
The humid nights, and kind words.
Still shell-shocked, I stayed in my room,
like coming home from a war, that could never be won,
Without being dramatic, I knew
If I stayed any longer, I would be dead.

Funny how songs can take you by the hand
and time travel you backwards
whether you want to or not.
How if you close your eyes,
you hear the rumble of the jets,
and you see those desert nights
of yelling, threats and so much more,
that made you run to the tarmac

and get on that plane.

Lie lie lie to me… on a 12 hour loop
over the cold Atlantic Sea.
All that love, where did it go?
All those plans for our family?
The sights and smells of The Middle East
getting further from me, as the engines hum and cruise.
I will never be able to hear this song again,
without smelling the canned air, the coffee,
dinner being prepared…
a kind voice saying softly,
“Can I get you anything?”

  1. Love this part: “I flew to the refuge of colored birds, / The humid nights, and kind words.” And the whole third stanza. And then I like how you use exact details (“on a 12 hour loop”). A very effective piece of art. Your work always pulls me in and makes me feel something. I feel your words so much. Thanks for sharing your talents!

    • Thank you my friend..this was years ago and yet, a random song has that power to time travel me back to that moment. Such a compliment you give me, if my poetry makes you feel something, I can say the very same for yours..Even your shorter pieces just bury in deep and open up my empathy, my connection to you. Your Song was, really powerful in that area..Wow..you just did it..I admire that so much in you Ben.

      • Yes, I know what you mean. Music is sometimes the great connector; art, in general, is tied to so many important aspects and moments of our lives. Thanks a lot. I still think about your incredible song you posted. I think it gave me some of the motivation and inspiration to try posting more of my songs. I am no musician but it’s fun to work on these things. And you’re welcome. I think the power of the mind (for good and bad) is it can take you to any moment like that. Again: very good work!

I absolutely love this, Karima. It’s so vulnerable and raw but done in such a beautiful way. Music is truly like a time machine, taking us to portals and memories of many kinds. Thank you for this amazing piece. Your writing is always graceful and stunning to read 🖤🤗

    • Thank you dear Ace, for vibrating to my poetry. We must have a bit of overlapping consciousness, because as you know, I too feel very connected to yours. Music is always part of my writing process…I felt like I either wanted to write a poem (no idea what about) or practice the piano..I told my friend Dale, I will give it 10 minutes to see if I might have a poem in me..and this song came up on my playlist….Boom the memory resurfaced and a poem, I had no idea I was going to write…was born too:) The creative process is so magical..the practical magic we mere mortals can actually experience:) 🙏❤️🤗🌹🌟

I agree…music is so incredibly powerful! It has the ability to lift us up, but also tug at the heart in the broken places. I felt like I was on the airplane with you! Yet another beautiful poem. Thank you so much for sharing your art with us.

    • Thank you so much Rapunzel, for this beautiful comment. It makes me happy to know, my poem could do that for you…put you in another seat and let feel that moment. Yes Music and smells sometimes are even better than photographs for bringing past scenes to the surface, and helping them come alive once again. Thank you for being such a gracious reader:):)🙏🤗🌟🌹

Music and memory can be so deep. I can’t remember the plot of a book that I read last week, but an old song can pull me back to something thirty or more years ago. You’ve expressed this so beautifully, capturing, as you so often do, a piece of universal human experience with a deeply personal story.

    • Ahhh thank you Dale…so true what you say here…I can forget a Netflix a week later too, but a song will take me back to all, the good and the sad, that is deeply imprinted in my mind’s memories..Music and as I said above, even smells, can bring it all to the foreground…so clearly!! Thank you for your insightful comment on my poem.

Oh Habibti, this was such a blissful piece to read. I am happy you have moved on and forgiven. It is not easy I am sure. But you are a soul that is so sensitive.. Like me.. So we still try to see the good in everything. I love how tenderly you have spoken about the past but still manage to evoke feelings in your readers. It is really commendable. Stay blessed my dear. Much love and hugs to you ❤️🤗🌹🙏💐😘

    • Dearest Diana…from one sensitive soul to another…yes forgiveness really is all we can do. As painful as that can be, after we do it…ahhh comes peace… Yes, it is hard to write publicly about such private moments and yet, as Dale points out, there will always be people who can totally relate..what is private is also universal; after all, we are all human beings:)
Still I don’t mean to disrespect anyone, but as we say in Spanish,”La verdad es la verdad” Truth is true:) I tried to touch that truth respectfully..and I see you felt it and you understood that too. Thank you for shining your sensitive eye on my poem and leaving this beautiful comment.🤗🙏❤️🌹🌺🌟

Oh habeebity, this was such a beautiful, heartfelt piece of yours. While reading, I thought myself to be at your place, how you must be feeling and I guess that’s the beauty of your writing, your pious thoughts. What a wonderful woman you are UmJulian, to forgive and move forward and still be cordial. I can so relate to this as I know a little glimpse of the background. I adore and respect you soo much habeebity ❤️❤️🤗🤗😘

    • Habeebity! Big hugs..I always love seeing you have left a comment for me:)🤗 Yes in this life we are asked to forgive (and to ask for forgiveness) many times. I think, if we have had to ask for it, it makes us more compassionate and therefore, easier for us to give it too. I do believe this is one of the great lessons Life teaches us..and when we truly forgive, the pain goes away too and we are in peace. I too adore you UmAnzar, and I love hvaving these little thoughtful discussions, inspired by your or my poetry!! I feel so very blessed to have crossed your path and your mine, in this time of my life. You are such a genuine loving soul, and not everyone who we will meet is:) You habeebity…are a keeper that I treasure and admire. THank you always fr your amazingly inspiring comments,❤️🙏❤️🤗🌹✨

  11. This poem was absolutely beautiful and extremely heartfelt. I feel honoured to have been able to read it. I don’t know much about love – but I could definitely relate to the parts about music. I have songs I used to love to dance and listen to when I used to be able to walk and now they sometimes can be too painful for me to hear now that I’m in a wheelchair. Your writing skills were also incredible here. I especially love the line: “my marriage dissolving into the clouds, trailing like a tail on the jet stream.”

    • Thank you so much Simone for your generous and thoughtful comment. I appreciate your words and love that you could relate..especially about the power music can have over us
I want you to know..that in my own way, I am also also disabled, not now in a wheelchair, but I have been, many times in my life. Here is a poem,,I wrote where I refer to this> I thought you might relate to parts of it too:https://karimahoisan.com/2021/03/05/poetry-and-me I totally agree with you..some songs can be almost too painful, for their memories attached. Forgiveness does help to release usfrom those powerful songs:) Thank you for liking this line…It just flew out…like the clouds:) Bless You Simone and stay creative!!🙏❤️🤗

Awww. Ruca! You painted a perfect picture of that lamentful scene so long ago. One can tell you did a good job of describing that sad, scared, heartbroken woman with dreams shattered on that plane because reading makes my heart hurt for her. Makes me want to embrace her and tell her that one day, all will be well. But she had to pay her dues, as always with the slow healing process. And the haunting music.

    • Aww Ruco, thank you for your comment..Yes you know so well, my whole life practically, and yes, you describe me well..shattered..Shattered dreams, (even shattered retina):( but Time has helped me forgive everything…and Yes this music was my self-soother all the way across the sea. Thank you Ruco…for feeling me…
