Short Prose Poetry Contest – Honorable Mention

Good CropM

Karima Hoisan, inspired by Sahara,
The Stars of Wadi Rum

author’s site

After the devoured lamb
licking our fingers clean
2 million stars of Wadi Rum
pulling our eyes
up to the sky
You hooked my
little pinkie
with yours
as we lay in the sand
hearing the adolescent boy
playing the Oud
until he made us cry.

Purple mountains
pink sand,
fake feet fights
laughing undercover
we muffled our laughter
with your sleeve.
No-one has the right
to be this happy

All I need is you.

Your profile,
a Persian princess
framed in embers
from a dying fire….
My honored one,
I trace your nose
with my feather,
wrap the blanket tighter,
those gelid desert nights.
are swirling swirling.

I’ll buy the best gold
to adorn us.
You always laugh
when I am serious.
I’m really serious!”

Some masks
with silver tooling
and hanging coins,
We’ll tinkle
and impress
next time
we buy bread,
but tonight….
I just need you
Cling to me,
we are a shipwrecked
life raft for each other
on this rolling sea
of sand.

“The caves are so beautiful
in morning light
“Come sleep
up above with us”
“You’ll miss it all”

“No thank you..
We’ll sleep below,
right here
by the fire…..”

“All I need is you
the stars of Wadi Rum”

There you go again, Karima, conjuring up 1000 and 1 nights, and I can feel soft breezes after a searing hot day, tender love and sweet fruits — this is really something else!

    • Awww Joey..hugs! Thank you for your beautiful words…This was written to the memory of Umahmad..and it really took place:) Gabriela, in her book, wrote one about being in love in the Sahara, and my mind drifted back to this night in Jordan…a singular experience of platonic love and romance. Just being close and sleeping together…was perfection! ❤️

This is such a gorgeous piece, Karima; and I enjoyed it even more on the second read through. The yearning and playfulness in this poem makes me giddy. Love it, my friend. ❤️🌹🌺🙏

    • Ohh thank you so much that makes my day:) I’m glad you felt the playfulness inside..the yearning was very real and yet, as I have explained, what we had was an amazing platonic romance…the yearning was to just be left alone, to not share one second of her presence with other people… Like fiercely tied by fate, just giggling talking and “spoonstyling”…was enough and was like heaven for us in those days… Hard to explain but such a gift to live:)❤️ Thank you for your appreciation of this poem.

You’re most welcome, Karima. I actually understand completely. There is something about connecting with another human being on that level, completely platonic, yet the love and desire to be with them is so deep. Is amazing and quite powerful. You are always a light, and reading you is a gift for us all. ❤️🌹🥰

  7. Thank you so much for expanding this discussion Jeff..and isn’t it amazing? These relationships can last forever until death do us part..and they are so rewarding and so less complicated:):) At the same time, as you say. they have their own power, their own passion..just to want to be together is the main desire:)❤️🌹🤗

    Ohhh Ruca!
So romantic! So you! “All I need is you and the stars of the awash Rum.” If this poem doesn’t make the recipient melt nothing would. It melted this reader. It makes me want to be in that Jordanian desert. You always have a way of charming me with your words!

Yes, I agree Karima. It was a wonderful contest and some amazing poetry was written. Gabriela is such a unique poet. I told her ages ago I thought she would be studied by students one day and I still believe this to be true.

You also do something that is incredibly different and so splendid to watch.
I was honored to be in the talented group. Sending you lots of love dearest Karima. 🤗❤️❤️🦋🦋
