Take My Heart

“Your Heart is Safe with Me” Markus Akesson”

My deepest affairs..
have been affairs of the heart;
bodies had no part in it..
they could have been stored
in a box.
These love stories
are always sublime,
always have amazing endings,
even when they end
in death and surprise,
even when they are
nothing like I thought they were,
even when I could have
felt betrayed..

but I didn’t.

Every affair of the heart,
I’ve known has been a gift.

A gift, a lesson,
even when I thought I was too old to learn…
one more thing.
I have lived and loved
in the most complicated ways.

Each one, could have been a novel,
could have been a soap opera
could have been on your kindle or on T.V…
but they all took place
in my head and in my heart,
sometimes, just my fingertips,
expressing all of me.

I could love you if you were Stephen Hawking,
brilliance trapped in your own human cage..
I might not ever know,
you could not walk or talk or run,

but if I ever found out,
I promise you,

I would love you even more.
My heart always sees the inside,
loves the soul and doesn’t care about
washboard abs or silky hair.
My heart is self repairing..
always ready to be given away
or worn on my sleeve.

Ah, this is exquisite poetry, Karima. When we love that hard, it is such a visceral experience, it touches every aspect of our humanity, and this love sometimes doesn’t even involve another human being, through they are a part of it. I read this poem into my heart where it will stay. I love it. ❤️🌹🥰🌺🙏

    • Ohh thank you Jeff for loving my poem!!🙏❤️ The more we love in that way “viscerally” as you say…The braver we become to lose sometimes..In the end all is a lesson with many beautiful memories. I truly think my heart has become more resilient from all these varied and I would say, uncommon affairs it has held inside:)

It’s always my pleasure to read you, and love your poems deeply, as I always do. Ah, I totally get the resilience you feel today as a result of this love. This happens and while it can be devastatingly difficult, there is so much joy also. ❤️🌹🙏🌺☺️

  5. Love brings joy when it comes straight from the heart. I loved this poem. (Also, it brings a bit of relief coz I’m thin as a skeleton! 😄 )

What a touching piece, as always, Karima. Last three lines are awesome. I fully resonate with you. Body cannot replace heart or mind, when it comes to feel true feelings. Reference to Stephen Hawking is so apt here. Your writings always impress me. All the best 👍💐💖

    • Thank you dear friend for your beautiful and inspiring comment. It’s amazing how much of love is lived inside of us..our minds, our hearts that hold the memories… I have lived long enough to know what is inside is what counts..all the outer trappings are only that..superficial and decorative..The essence and what we truly love..lies within:)❤️🤗🙏

Glorious lines, dear Karima, so poignant and resonating to me. Isn’t the self-repairing heart just so beautiful in its ability to still give even when we are caring for its healing…

    • Oh I so agree Lauren! Thank you for resonating to this part.. I guess we need to have enough experiences (wins and losses) to find that this is the case..But the heart wants to love..It is what it is all about:) Yes it’s really incredible how it can bounce back..even when it has been hurt and disappointed.. Thank goodness it is this way!! I loved your introspective comment.❤️🤗

      • Yes, you are so right, Karima. ❤ It may take time, but I feel we can learn to deal better, then best with these hurts and disappointments with our heart, and fare better each and every time. Practice and time. 🙂 Have a great day, my friend! ❤

Oh so beautiful and you got me at the end, my mom use to say to me all the time, “Josie Karen, you wear your heart on your sleeve.” We love hard and hurt hard but learn from our experiences. Love you sweetie. ❤️❤️

    • Oh Joni… your mom and my mom both used that expression:) and the first time mine said it to me..I totally got it and knew…she was right..I was always ready and capable of dusting it off and putting it back on there.. so vulnerably. For some reason, even in school, I was not afraid to get it broken (my heart) because I I did learn rather early one..hearts heal:) and love is always worth taking that chance:)❤️❤️❤️

I know strange expression. We share this one and it sounds like we both wear our hearts on our sleeves still. You are right it is better to have been hurt then not tried at all. We know this. Big hugs my friend. ❤️🤗🥰
