Leaves of Mercy

Ant on a green floating leaf on blue water

Ant on a green floating leaf on blue water

Leaves of Mercy

I am the one who saves
all the insects
from drowning in the pool.
Their flailing little
legs and wings,

gleaming in the sun,
twinkling like stars floating
on a turquoise sea.
I will interrupt my laps
a hundred times
a thousand times,
skimming a leaf from the surface
I scoop them up so carefully…
Wasps and butterflies, ants and bees….
I make no exceptions
for the ones that sting,
at that moment..
all who are about to drown
are exactly the same to me.
They’re at the very end of life…
panicking,
gasping,
trying with their last breath
to lift off to safety,
but failing.
Desperate and exhausted
some succumb too soon
and can’t be saved.

Then rising from,
the deep end of the pool
(an insects watery grave)
I come to save the day.
I am their towering Superhero
Rescue is my claim to fame.
With leaves of mercy in my hands,
not one insect left behind..
All shivering in the sun,
now drying out on land.
I return to the depths,
lap number 51…
smiling under water,
the whole twelve meter length..
Lives were saved today…
another job well-done.

    Sweet and lovely!

At that moment, we are indeed exactly the same.

May we all find mercy like yours in the pool!

How gorgeous this is, dear Karima. It speaks to me of the deep connection and interdependence we have on each other, especially in late life. Often people think they are doing things alone, yet, the divine is always guiding, as are other people, in each step of our journey. This lead represents, to me, the capacity and depth of possibility in love. I love this write. ❤️🤗🌸✨🙏

    • Love your eyes on my poem Jeff..and yes..It is about interdependence and connection.. Yes I agree, The divine might use a subtle hand, but I can feel it.. A greater designer than myself, chose to give things life..I might not understand why everything is alive *stinging insects* for one? but Life is Life…who am I to start making exceptions and playing the divine’s role? I loved your comment..🙏🦋🐝❤️🌷

Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker, you can get all your liquor down Costa Ricker, Ain’t nobody’s business but my own ! Ah yes ! Leaf cutter aunts ! You are a marvel Karima….but a bit strange.
Being a bit strange is better than being totally normal. I know. I am stranger than you are. Just keep being you Karima ! It is people like you that make this life more interesting. AND if you take the EYE (i) out of your name…….you get ” KARMA “. I think you have good Karma Karima !

I love this one Ruca! It is soooo you. You’re always lending a hand. And of course I enjoy how you throw swimming into the mix. Metaphoric … We swim through our day to day lives. Do we stop to aid the unfortunate or do we continue with our ever important laps? The great poet Walt Whitman once said, “Give alms to all that ask without question.” And the great poet Karima Hoisan said, “All who are about to drown are exactly the same to me. “

  7. A beautiful glimpse into what it means to care. I love the presentation. How easy it is to be drawn in by insects and how nice to be able to marvel at their flight. My lawn is full of flowers that provide pollen and nectar to attract insects. I think I might have a dark side because I have also watched insects caught in a spider web!

    • I am smiling as I too have seen the poor fly trapped by the spider..but I know enough to not get involved..still I can ‘t look:) Thank you so much David for your kind comments and sharing your love of insects too.. Your comments are always very appreciated..
