When The Wallpaper Shifts

Oh I do remember when the wall paper began to shift,
morphing like a running animation next to my bed.
All I had to do was stare awhile, and it began to join
with my bedspread, until it became one lush jungle.

I crawled under the covers that were now rooting flowers
I heard the strange bird calls, and drums and growls
The greenery hid me from being seen by everything
and my pet tiger, Tango came when I called, to protect me.

When I started to go to school, I lost my powers to see
The vibrant world of a child’s nascent creativity.
Not until I got a little older, did I learn to go there when…
I could block-out all that stuff I learned and find my child again.

  4. What a beautiful poem you created in your imagery Karima. “I crawled under the covers that were now rooting flowers I heard the strange bird calls, and drums and growls “. It makes me want to visit and pull the covers over my head in the land of the jungle. So wonderful!!! 💞

    • Awww thanks so much Cindy…imagine if you and I were neighbors, I would have certainly invited you to join me. I used to ask my father if the wallpaper made movies but he missed out on all that wonder, by being an adult:):) He’d smile, “Such an imagination you have!!! Now today as poets, we know how lucky we are to maintain that imagination:):) 💕

Me gustó tu poema. Testimonio donde la fantasia dominaba nuestro quehacer en nuestra infancia. Saludos Karima.

This gave me the sudden urge to revisit my childhood…those moments when we can be anything we wanna be…and see what we wanna see.

    • Thank you so much Mich and what you just said, is how I felt when i saw Dale’s image. It sent me rushing back to those days where we could trust that our imaginations would take us to fabulous places. Ahh innocence was magical when we believed in All that our imagination c could dream up. Thank you for your great comment!

Truly the creativity we possess in childhood is an inspiration to the original and I find it quite sad that it begins to organically fade away as we grow. I love this poetic narrative that serves as a reminder to rediscover the magic of childhood and embrace our creativity. ❤

    • Yes Layla, I think we are at our best before we get our heads filled with so many “necessary facts” and told that make-believe is a silly pastime, when in reality it is honing our future creative processes:) So glad you vibrated to this poem, that came fast and almost almost complete, after 15 seconds of looking at this evocative image. I really love your comments..Thank you for your generosity to take the time to leave them for me:) 🌹🦋🌟

We’ve all been there. You paint a nice picture of the picture with your words. Brings to mind the story, Where the Wild Things Are. I love all your work Ruca!

Nice one! The closest I came to this experience was post-op in the hospital after a broken leg was mended. Excruciating pain lasted a week that I scarcely remember save a few choice moments, such as when I woke up, high on Demerol, and stared at a wooden cabinet and said allowed, “Why doesn’t the knot [boat] reach the bottom [of the stream of grain]?” I saw it literally moving down toward the floor in a tan river.

    • Hi Jer wow you spent some time here last night!! Thank you so much and I loved your story about the knot and the grain… yep I saw things like that when I was waking up at 3 and 4. Thank you for this great commentary my friend 🙏
