The Perfumed Trees
Please click play to hear my Spoken Word of this poem to the music “Somewhere in the Wild” by Saleka, from”The Servant”
Just last night the wind changed direction
and brought the scent
of a scene we played,
on a breezy night,
heavily perfumed with flowers
and it felt so much
like that summer 40 years ago,
when you were in my life,
and I had just begun to be in yours.
We didn’t want to spend the money
so we danced outside the club,
in a dimly lit corner, just under the trees.
When the guitar began to wail,
was when you first kissed me.
Was it because it was the first,
or the perfumed trees,
or that moon- less night
with a heady, sensual breeze?
Sitting tonight in a rocking chair,
I can still rock to the beat of that bass
and feel that kiss that found its home for eternity,
tucked inside my memory, like flowers in a vase
It happens that once in a while, on nights like this
with just the right smell on the breeze
I rock and wonder and remember
our first kiss, below the perfumed trees.

Lovely, sweet and hot and nostalgic! You’re awfully creative there in your rocking chair. 🙂 And a gorgeous audio track too.

Karima, the vivid nostalgia and sensory details in recalling the first kiss beneath the perfumed trees create such a poignant image. You’ve beautifully captured the essence of that moment in time!

Ahhh it was my pleasure even if it was unconscious, I’m so glad it touched your own spark…Funny how we are called back to a time, a moment with just a shift in the breeze or a special taste that zips us back into our past.. Like you, and we have talked about it,…absolutely no regrets Big hugs!!

we had the tropical moon and
we enough.”

Yes what moré actually when I was writing this poem I thought of you.. this id your type of a homage to a love from the past. You have many snd you remember them fondly. I have fewer but still very significant for me. We both are nostalgics and romantics… incurable ones 🙃

Thanks so much for listening Kate. Yes there are smells or songs, that can catapult me back into the past..it all comes back visually like a movie scene, but with all the senses engaged. I think we can all do that now and then..seems a very human trait:)

You’re so welcome.. I always love but have to go back later to respond and take in. I’m near there but save some love for later.. It’s contagious and I can always use more of that❤️
