Lights Out!

                                                  King Kong by Patrice Murciano

Lights Out!

Lights out! Darkness spreads a black fog carpet
Enveloping the floor, the adrenaline pooling and spilling
Paralyzed thighs, thoughts of blows & lies, hold me tight.
I can hardly breathe in this clamped down moonless night.

Doors open. Dog of the night glares through her veil
Whimpering, will broken flopping on her back,
Bites the air and the hand that doesn’t feed her anymore.
I can hardly breathe in this torture chamber of nevermore,

Doors close. There’s no Kong the kindly gorilla who’s leaving
Locking, the King’s key held in his hand, for he is the King,
Not big-hearted but cruel, he smiles at the sound of its click.
I can hardly breathe in this drapery suite of claustrophobia and sick.

Raise your hands
if you have tried to soothe the beast,
stroking his matted fur,
while your tears are drying
you climbed into his hand to sleep.

Raise your voice if you got out alive
realizing you would be dead
if you didn’t leave in time
or if you’d never tried.

The last verse has elevated this poem to another level, Karima! It’s a reminder of hope. A ray of light in the cold, dark world which inhabits our mind. It’s so easy to slip into it, yet we also have the power to pull ourselves up and conquer the darkness within.

Your poem is very much alive and that’s the beauty of it!

    • Aww thank you Harshi…yes the last verse was to assure those reading this…that eventually there was a happy ending…a change of scene,… yes a “ray of light” you said..Thank you for so deeply reading this one…I know it is not an easy poem to “enjoy”

    • Hello Marc…1. please respect the rules of commenting..all caps is a big shouting rage for most people..2. This poem, as I said below, was written in 2007..as I also said as a footnote, in a dark time. Now is not 2007, so I am in a much better place:) Thanks for your concern. 3. Poets write about Everything.. and not everything in our lives in every moment, is all roses and happiness. If you send me a new comment, not all caps, that would cheer me up a lot..I enjoyed your comment about The Pan Am highways so much…let’s just keep it respectful supportive..and not shout…Ok? I am sure you were only trying to emphasize your feeling upset, by my poem..I’m sorry if that happened.

    • Thank you so much Kaushal….this was a poem from long ago..never posted, but part of my journey. I know it is not easy to read(or to live at that time) but I am in such a better place, today as you so correctly say:
“Brightness comes after dark” Thank you so much for understanding me..and my feelings.. and being such a supportive friend,🙏🌹🦋

  8. Only when darkness really envelopes you can you truly understand. I recall that feeling of utter despair some twenty years ago. More recently, about six years ago, learning my cancer has no cure was much easier to come to terms with. I feel for those in darkness right now.

    • Oh my, yes David…you have lived the dark moments too. and I agree with you..I feel for everyone who has yet to get out of that state..for whatever reason they are in it.. InshAllah they will find the light..find a reason again to live their lives.. Thank you so much for sharing your personal struggle with your health. I am hope you are doing well at this moment..

Oh wow, I love the intensity & flow of your lines…crazy powerful & raw…beautifully painful…I see beauty in darkness…in this piece…darkness is a great teacher…like a zen master…from darkness comes the light…and light reveals the darkness…thank you for sharing this piece from 2007 💫

    • Dear Navin..I somehow missed your comment…Thank you my friend..for helping me to see the light inside the darkness.. This was a very painful period in my life and all of it has now been healed..I’m glad to say..Everyone has their own demons…and some are surely more dangerous to others…some are more dangerous to those who house them..whether they know they do or not… 🙏🌹
