Where Is The World?

Broken

Please Click Play to hear me recite my poem to the music “Mad World” an instrumental cover
by The Brooklyn Duo.

Where is the World?

Where is the World
in this mad world?

in this “Time of No Time”
where we feel the icy breath
of the apocalyptic stallions
riding down upon us.

How can we all keep silent
when there is so much suffering?
When there is so much we should say?
I hide in virtuality making pretty movies,
where the children are all safe…
nothing to do with reality

nothing to do with our world…
an upside-down egg that fell off the wall
and cracked open
spreading its insides out,

for all to see.

I am horrified with the apathy
I am horrified with me, my willingness
to be silenced for my own peace of mind
My doctor says, “You need to stay calm
Zero stress….
but my inner voice yells at me,
“You need to stay human..
Don’t forget!”

Where is our compassion?
Where is our humanity?

How easy it is to turn the pages
turn the channel
Look away…
disconnect  from the pain of others
because they’re too far away?
too different?  too uncomfortable  to watch
on TV?

Where is the world that yells out in solidarity
“Stop this horror right now!”
Where??

Beautiful and poignant. And all too timely. How do we balance compassion for all the suffering in the world, with the need to breathe ourselves? I think pretty movies where the children are all safe is something that we need, and something that helps… art helps, hope helps. And protests, sit-ins, letters and votes.

    Stop this horror, right now!

    Indeed…

    • Thank you Dale for what you say here and I do agree there is a need too for

laughter, and …”pretty movies where the children are all safe…” but apathy feels somehow just too removed. Prayer helps, it all helps and we need to find the balance or we can lose our minds too…Thank you so much for understanding why I had to write this now. We can never forget love, give it freely, so many need it now..Love brings hope… it just does InshAllah. 🙏

A timeless question: how do we balance our own sanity and health while maintaining some sense of empathy and compassion with the rest of the world? And your choice of music is perfect as I always ask those questions when it plays. Well done!

    • Thank you Scottius for adding your voice…The balance…the balance is very delicate and yet if Life has not “deadend us” we all have the voice of our humanity inside..Sometimes I just need to write it down…Like today.I really enjoyed and of course related to your comment…thank you for bravely coming to my blog and taking on a very cumbersome, over-sensitized wordpress comment machine..that loves to throw the best comments into spam folder:):)

Karima, this is some of the questions I have too.
Many have become Desensitized. Many have Lost all respect for the human condition. Acting only if it gets us social points (in the cloud, no less—because really…how to account and redeem those points?)
Like reading dystopian novels. It ends when the book is closed.
Where is the world, really. We need all hands and hearts to open. Now! Damn it—now!

Thanks for posting this lovely piece. The audio is gorgeous. Xo 🤗

    • Yes, you said it perfectly. Selma..Thank you for this from-the-heart comment…”Where is the world, really. We need all hands and hearts to open. Now! Damn it—now!” I feel this urgency too, I feel the frustration of watching everything and everyone continue on as if “normal” no change, no breakthroughs..something really significntly different that will begin to make a difference…Where is it? Thank you so much for sharing your words on the subject! Hugs Selma.

Dearest Karima my dear friend, I first want to thank you for this piece, so honest you are my friend. Your idea of the egg is brilliant, we are all broken eggs I believe. I want to tell you how much I just love this music and your voice is so compelling along beside your amazing words, which I believe to be something most of us struggle with especially once we get a bit older. To we want to protest perhaps wind up in jail? Do we dare even express our disgust at the most recent atrocity that just happened in the US for fear of being penalized by those we want to be published by, are we as writers finding ourselves more concerned at offending someone than telling our truth. I think so indeed, I believe that is our truth. However, I am no different. I was a strong young thing that stood up for my rights and there is a price to pay and we all know it. Those of us who have anyway. All we have to do is look at history. Your poem just resonated with me so intensely Karima. You are a brilliant writer and poet and your music and spoken word is a gift.

You bring up such an important point as things could start getting really crazy in the US and most of the other Countries have been looking at the US for a long time and wondering what in the world is happening there. BRAVO my dear friend, I love you for your honesty, and the fact that I know we were very much alike when we were younger but we have to be careful to a certain extent now.

However, the latest shooting of a black women in the US has got me wanting to take to the streets but even the NAACP is cautioning people to allow the legal process to work, I just pray it does. I have been sick about this horror and can not stop thinking about it.

So thank you for these beautiful words you write, the brilliant artwork and music as always my friend. I love you and believe me when I say you have done your part my friend and then some in making the world a fairer and kinder part.

    • Your comments are like a perfect weekend, to take the time, have the time to savor and digest them. Thank dear dear soul..I see you in this poem too..We who were marching in the streets, now debilitated by, age, and illness and Doctor’s Orders!! but the soul remains too very human and it hurts to be living in this world today… Now racist riots in the UK, Ireland..oh my what and where next?
I must tell you I did not write this music, it is a gorgeous instumrntal cover of the classic called Mad World..please look up the original, the lyrics are so good and so current now, altho it was recorded in 1982..it is still so relevant today.
Thank you my beautiful friend, for listening, for taking the time to write this very real and relatable comment…and thank you for seeing us both in this…and many many more. I love you Joni..I have been quite absent from WordPress but just know my health is holding pretty well and my muse id sending me to the movies…smiles to make more of them..I am inspired!! Love you sweetie,,let’s talk soon.
