Crows Look Down

Driving down a familiar highway day in day out
One day…the scenery changes;
the weather turns to winter
and the wheel chills your hands
In the middle of the summer.
No warning signs…no yellow roadblocks
High white clouds exit…
Stormy Wedgwood – blue ones
roll in, taking their place.
Flocks of crows in the treetops,
look down suddenly
on your rooftop.
Are you dreaming? Are you crazy?
Should you have known
today was the day?
You feel that flutter of colorless butterflies
The question you ask…
“Should I stay in my car and keep driving?”
Maybe it will all make sense around this next bend…
and really, you have no choice now
Winter has snowed you to a crawl, but you can’t survive,
if you get out.

Well-this is a mood setter! The ominous skies-the ominous crows. A foreboding of possible tragedy. Life sometimes looks like this. You can’t move backwards. You can’t stop. You are on a possible hazardous path-but could be fatal if you stop. So-are these things interpretations of real danger? Are these feelings of merely foreboding? Is there certain danger ahead if you keep going? Are dreadful winds of fate about to deal you a blow? This feels like a real life ride on a haunted roller coaster with no safety belts or brakes or anyone sane driving. Is the abyss perilously ahead? Reminds me of the world right now. Danger always lurks! This is what fear feels like, I think. That you captured!

    • Wow..Ronald, you are so perceptive and amazingly sensitive and in -tuned to my poetry!
Yes yes yes..all you said above. Once again the “right music” (I hope you listened to the recording) was needed to pull out the words to describe a real moment, a real fear I was experiencing. Danger does lurk anytime..Sometimes Life comes in like an ambush, or like a winter blizzard in summer to shake us out of our complacency, our security, our…status quo. You are amazing how you see so much…in such few lines. Thank you for being you and my friend:)

Wow Miss Karima! What IS the correct thing to do? Confront the situation? Keep moving? What lies ahead? Loose ends in this Poe-esque dream. You did it yet again!

    • Thank you Jaya, first for visiting my blog…and for enjoying this piece. I’m not sure if you listened to the recording, but I wrote it to perform in live virtual readings. I am so glad you liked the last line…yes a dilemma to be sure:)
