The Eagle

The frozen ground the bitter sky
hunger gnaws a hole
The icy winds slice the wings
of the powerful eagle
on his perch surveying.

His sharp claws
his telescoping eyes,
his noble beak
waiting, waiting,
freezing,
on his perch,
that scrapes the sky.

Then,
in a catapult
off the angled peak.
wingspan opening,
covering the sun
He soars,
inflowing smooth,
powerful,
so full of grace.

Riding the air currents
like a slippery
bareback stallion,
circling, looking waiting
until….
he slides off an updraft
and folds
his majestic wings,
in a death-dive
not his own(of course)
but for his target far below.

The Rabbit

Hungry,
out and about,
against best instincts
leaving a warm,
safe burrow,
because he must be.
Little snow bunny
nose wiggling
digging,
in the drifts.
Hoping to find
anything to eat.

He investigates,
foraging in a
winter landscape.
His eyes see,
a tree
100 meters away.
the bark,
would be tasty,
maybe some twigs,
if he digs down.

It is folly,
to be so exposed.
Only starvation
could convince him,
he must try..
The nimble hop,
the fleet zig zag
of evasion,
brings him closer.
Memory puts the taste
of savory tree bark
inside his mouth,
and he forgets
for a second
to look up.

The sky turns dark,
a wind blows;
he feels fear
The sun
is blotted out;
his life
is on a string
that snaps in two
when giant talons
stand on him,
dead stop
in his rush.
Only one
will eat today.

My eyes fill with tears,
sitting in a dentist chair,
watching this scene
above my head,
unfold on a flat-screen TV.
I think to myself
so childishly,
I want you all to eat
but I want everyone to live”

  4. I really like that you show us both sides of the medal.
And I love how you show it.
But most of all, its an ironic, watching this scene sitting in a dentist chair.

    • Aww Thank you Nat for visiting me today:) It was so ironic because much of the time I had my eyes closed. My dentist, has his TV above to entertain and distract patients..and always runs Animal Planet/Discovery Channel with no sound. so I would peek..close, peek close but when it was all over, that last line ran through my head….as soon as I got home..I wrote it down,,,and today…a poem was born out of an hour at the dentists…Ironic but true. Big hugs and blessings always ❤️🤗🙏🌟🦅🐇❣️

Wow! You had me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t see that coming at all. And, ah, yes, another of the paradoxes of life. To die is to have lived. Or, at least we hope so. Beautifully written, Karima. ❤️✨🙏🌺🤗

Karima! This is so uniquely beautiful. I mean, what a beyond fantastic piece. I’m so speechless. Your poems just speak to me on a whole other level…you have a gift of shining your energy/authenticity so powerfully through your words. So crazy cool how a dentist visit inspired this piece, I love that!!! Great job you!!!!!!! 🤗🖤

    • Awww Ace, what a wonderful thing to say…Really..I’m smiling, blushing, and shining🤗
I was so captivated by the drama unfolding on the TV.. looking at it, instead of at the dentist (smiles) I was transported into this snowy scene of survival of the fittest..Truly on the way home, that last line was ringing in my head.. I really wanted everyone to win..and well..that can’t be. I wrote the line down on Wednesday just in case…and today, it became a poem. Habeebity, thank you so much for appreciating my rather off-center at times, brand of poetry…I love that you do!! It makes me feel free to take chances:) Blessings and Love..and I am about to watch your PART 3….can’t wait..🤗❤️🌟🌹🦋❣️

You’re right, Karima, an eagle has telescopic eyes and sharp claws. It reminds me of an inspiring rebirth story of an eagle, the longest living bird, as to how painfully it replaces its beak, talons and feathers to live for 30 years more. But I’m surprised how you linked it with the dentist, another painful experience. Your expression of emotion is awesome. You are really amazing, Karima. Loved this post 😊🤗💐💖🌷

    • Hi Kaushal thanks so much for your comment. I divided the poem in 3 parts … The Eagle, The Rabbit, and my last commentary, which sums up my feelings of watching this drama of predator snd prey play out on a flatscreen tv that hangs on the ceiling of my dentist’s office. i was actually watching this Animal Planet show about Siberia, where food is scarce snd only the quick and smart survive. That was why I chose such an ironic title. It’s a true story turned into a poem 🙏❤️🦅🐇🌨

This was so subtlety beautiful and profound in so many ways, dear Karima! How do you visualize such beauty!! Your words and heart are truly one in a million! I was mesmerized till the very end and was quite surprised how you managed to bring our such a lovely poem just by a visit to the dentist! Well done my dear! ❤️❤️🌻💐🤗🌹

    • Awww thank you habeebity..I had no idea my trip to the dentist would produce a poem..but as you know, *smiles, poetry is everywhere. Honestly by the end of that segment, I was crying..had to hand -signal to the dentist that it was the TV above, not his work that was making the tears fall down my cheeks:) Thank you..so much lovely Diana, for vibrating to my poetry.. you always get me and make me smile.. BIg hugs habeebity, Bless your poetic, generous soul !!🙏🤗❤️🌹🌟❣️🌕

Oh habeebity, this is so beautiful. About how we all live and get the other one down to sustain, it’s the food chain, one preys the other. You look at the the life of one creature, pity them but hate them as they do something wrong to another. That’s how life is. You are such a talent UmJulian. Love you❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗🤗

Hope you are back to all better and can chase tornado around the house and the park:) Love you habeebity…❤️🤗🌹🙏❣️🌟🌕

Ruca…I always knew you to be one with birds, especially birds of prey. But this! You capture the movements of the eagle with exact precision! (Riding the air currents like a slippery bareback stallion) Then the prey… The whys and the wherefores of the bunny’s movements. Then the moment! These seconds that you have snared and put into words, leave me in awe! You always amaze me!

    • Thank you Ruco… Yes, as I said at the end, I unrealistically don’t want anyone to die for others to live…but that is how it’s set up in the world of the predator. Of course you know my love of birds, those meat eating, high-flying ones especially. So glad you loved my description…You are my favorite Ruco:):)
