Wide-eyed and Innocent..
I always knew you were a real unicorn
living inside an ordinary human being,
waiting for just the right moment to reveal
and show the world what I knew you to be.
I’ve seen everyone and everywhere around me
disbelieve what their eyes can’t touch or see,
turn blind and cynical when they turn nine
because their child’s eyes have gone to sleep.
I have somehow kept mine wide-eyed and innocent
considered gullible, easily duped and deceived,
But I would never change my sight for any other
I can see beauty in almost absolutely everything.
Even the dark slush makes its art anywhere I go.
I usually keep it to myself, as no one wants to know.
The molded shades of black and grey excite my soul
when it covers the curbs and drains in liquid melting snow.
So when you threw off your suit and tie, at that party
and where you parted your hair a horn started to grow
I didn’t think twice to jump on your back and ride you like that
now all could see, what I always saw, but they could never know.

My pleasure Dale… it’s lovely to prolong that “belief in all good things” as long as possible.. I think..but realism and cynicism are always snapping at our heels:)

What an amazing poem, Karima. It’s so important to keep that child alive, and too often people, me at one time too, long ago, trade it in for “seriousness”, yet the paradox of it all is one can be serious AND laugh, live, and love like a child at anytime, when they free themselves from the concepts taught to them about “adulthood”. This poem speaks to me deeply. I love it. ❤️✨🌸🌹🤗🙏

Aww thank you Jeff for this beautiful comment…I might have exaggerated a tiny bit (smiles) but I feel that this sense of child-like wonder…does keep our spirits young even into old age. When we lose this wonder, when everything is “explained away” we lose that magic that before we could see everywhere..the one..we poets are still lucky to see from time to time, if we remember how to open our eyes wide and believe:) Thank you my friend for leaving me your thoughts and letting me know it spoke deeply to you.❤️🌹🤗🙏🦋

That childlike innocence sometimes produces a clear and coherent view of the world. As a child I remember when the story of ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ was first read to me.

Thank you David for commenting…and yes.. I remember that story and how I have seen it many times in Life. Yes that innocence sometimes helps us to balance out the cynicism of the world, the media..our negative neighbors…our own skepticism… I would rather be proven wrong than to always think the worst..

An amazing poem about your knowing, I sense…your child…the soul…I love the line “I always knew you were a real unicorn”…the child’s wide eye & innocence you’ve kept is divine…everything is beautiful…but we can only see the true beauty when we allow ourselves to be that child…whose eyes aren’t wearing any artificial shades…they are simply open & naked…thank you very much for such beautiful sharing, Karima ✨

This is so lovely. Why is it that we start to lose those child like eyes. It is sad and I am so glad you never lost yours. This is a lovely piece and the ending reminds me of a wonderful child’s story. So lovely. Beauty even in the melting slush which once was snow, I especially love that part and of course the unicorn. Don’t ever lose that child like sense. It makes you special and is why you make those beautiful movies too. I hope that the rest of your week is filled with much love my friend. Sending a big air balloon filled with fairies, they will be bringing beautiful costumes for your movies, and costumes made with silk worms that dance. It took them months but they will come this evening. When the outside becomes alive with fireflies look up in the sky and you will see them there. I hope you enjoy their work. Sending my love, Joni

Oh Joni..I see you were busy exploring my latest posts..and that always thrill me when I see you leaving your generous comments..because..it is felt in the time you take to really communicate and comment on each poem..each comment is a beautifully wrapped gift you leave at the door,,and I take it inside and open it carefully…enjoying each thought, each word.:) HUGS!! Oh you know I am waiting for those fairies to arrive in their balloon with their intricate costumes…Just in time because I have started on my next movie…I will bring to life a comment of Sundaram’s on my poem “You brought the music” where he said: “Thanks for the dedication. Really wish I could see the whole scene in one of your youtube videos. ” Well sometimes wishes come true..maybe months later..but I hope to make this a beaen fireflies come alive…Thank you dearest Joni..for your comment and your love and your child..still able to see what many always miss ❤️🤗🦄
