Slow Dance by Dale Innis on Midjourney
Please Click Play to hear me recite my poem to the beautiful music, The Promise by Sturgill Simpson, that inspired me to write it.
Slow dancing way back in the past,
this song just started to play,
we hadn’t planned it at all,
but then you asked me to dance
and then there we were
swaying back & forth…
and you pressed me against your chest
and I was feeling like I was in love again
hoping this night and this song
would never end.
We could go on and on and on
to that hypnotic voice & beat
but not a word was spoken
on that dance floor
and love and passion and the
deepest feelings came over us..
while we slow danced in silence
to the jukebox on an empty dance floor.
We suspended time and it stayed just
like it was, just how I remembered
slow dancing with you.
This dance, the guitar, the night poured its
spell over us.
We didn’t even know how we felt
or what would come next
but dancing to that song
that beat, my head on your shoulder
your name on my lips,
we stayed voiceless, not a word spoken
we just let the singer
say it all in his own way
and it just seemed so right.
I’d give anything to travel to that night..
the first time you asked me to dance
and Time stopped…..
It stopped 30 40 50 60 years
until I heard it play again tonight.
Slow dancing way back in the past
this song just started to play,
I hadn’t planned it at all
but you were not here to ask me to dance
and I swayed back & forth alone in my room
and I almost could feel like I was in love again,
hoping that night and this song
would never end.

Beautiful! And the audio is amazing. Only you could do spoken word over a track with lyrics, and have it work perfectly. 😁

Thank you Dale…the muse just would not let me sleep…when that song came up..the words poured out of me..I was transported:) I had to record it with his voice… because without it, there would be no poem.

wow, it surely does catch the mood! it transports me to the wildest & most rowdy time in my life. my guardian angel had to work a lot of overtime! ah, now is very peaceful compared to those old days. i have fallen in love with peace, quiet & simple contentment. it takes a lot less to feel happy too. a kind word, a golden sunrise, a smile.🤗😊
not only is your poem highly evocative, pulling deeply buried memories out into the light, it has a feel of acceptance to it, like i can lay that one aside because it has reached completion, cant go any further with it. ah, but it was indeed magical in its moment🙏🏼❤️🥰no regrets🦋

Ahhh soulkin was a gorgeous transparent parallel comment you gifted me in your reply. I have several “wild times” before I was pretty well tamed and
this music, his voice, just killed me (in a good way) I was watching “The Leftovers” with Dale and this song came on and all of a sudden, no more movie, I was scouring youtube to find the movie soundtrack…and sure enough I did!! Then my muse says to me, “one minute you are not going to bed until you let this music wash through you, and trigger a poem..that is just dying to pour out. My muse Always knows best and when she said, “better record it while you feel it” Well I stayed up a bit later but …here it is!! Oh yes soulkin you are right, I do feel acceptance and deep nostalgic gratefulness to have lived all of this to the fullest:)
Big hugs and thank you for giving this a listen:):) 🤗🌹💕

Thank you so much Joyce… I think his song could be sung at a wedding as it is a promise he makes to her, my poem does say that years later, we are no longer together:):) but what a gorgeous piece to dance to for the bride and groom:) You’re right!!

Dearest Karma, Scott and I read and listen to your beautiful poem this evening and it reminded us of the first time we danced. It definitely stopped the time, for the entirety of the dance, and he asked me if I loved him a little bit that night, and I said I did. What a beautiful piece, with the music, and your lovely voice.
We both really enjoyed it and we still enjoy a quiet dance at home. You are so right it reminds me of when I met my husband on the Dancefloor that night. Thank you for this beautiful piece. Sending you love from the both of us. ❤️🙏❤️

Ahhh I am “preaching to the choir” when you are listening, John. You must be the most romantic, nostalgic poet here I know…and you are so prolific and your stories, your vignettes feel so very real. I love the music on this one…it inspired this memory. Thank you for this comment 🙏
