Please click Play to hear me recite this poem to the music from Buddah Bar Vol V

It’s 1am and I’m awake
thinking I wonder why you have not called;
it’s been a week
since the last time I heard your voice
and you said, “Hey Tita..how’s my girl?

I can barely walk and you faint
and fall on the floor.
It seems an impossibility
you will ever visit me again.

I had not seen your face for
30 years and then there you were
in my living room
sitting side by side again
holding hands after so much time
It just seemed so right.

Age has changed the lighting
and now what we have left
are just our memories
our dreams now and then
and a phone call once a week.

But once upon a time,
We were in our prime
when I met you at a dance.
You came to our table
and held out your hand
and pulled me close,
and in a tight two – step
like we had danced together forever
we moved across the room.

You were so handsome,
the iconic Latin cowboy
with surprising green eyes
and a white hat saying
all those words that just thrilled me.

Time drifts away from us
and I don’t look like me
and you don’t look like you.

But when we close our eyes
and just hold hands
we are those wild versions of ourselves
riding at full gallop in the rain
our cutaway black rain coats
with tails flying behind us.
I get a tear when I remember
that you and that me
young and full of passion
and life
and somehow that still stays inside
and I can barely walk and you
faint and fall dizzy to the floor
and neither of us will ever ride
again.

Oh I don’t know how long
I can keep on going
some of the best
are getting left behind
and now even memory starts to fail me.
Did I ride the roan and you the bay
or was it more the other way.

I loved you in those days and we were
such a handsome couple
ranching and riding, while the waves
crashed below us on the shore.
I get tears in my eyes when I remember
but I’m so grateful for those times
I would awake locked inside your arms
each break of day.
and for each glorious sunset
that caught us on the trail.

Of course I would do it all over again.
You know I would do it all over again.

I recognize that longing, that wistfulness for days gone by. It’s a part of me now as well. You have captured it beautifully with your words and voice.

This is another beautiful elegiac poem redolent of Saudade. It makes me want to say that nothing we have loved is in the ‘Everlost’. We only see one bead at a time, but Love is the cord which makes a rosary of it all. Your sharing of memories and your faithfulness to all those bring a comfort in autumn…..

    • Thank you so much Belavar, and yes you are right…this poem was born last night on the swelling moon, when nostalgia robbed me of my sleep…Saudade yes indeed, and I traveled back in imagery to who we were and who we are now…a unique pair of ranchers and riders galloping in the rain, our raincoat tails flapping and flying…and now neither of us can ride a horse or dance a two-step..The music I use was the music that pulled this poem out of me..

BEAUTIFUL PIECE, dear Karima! This feels so nostalgic and real in such a soothing way! You told such a touching story laced with so much emotion and heart-centered feelings, it was a wonderful adventure to read. One can’t help but think of the relationships in their life while reading this, and that it is the work of a very talented writer like yourself 😊…the way you touch the reader is always so special!!! 🤍🤗

    • Awww thank you dearest Grace…it is very real and it comes right from the heart. Yes it’s personal, but it’s human so it becomes a time-worn tale of aging and memories. I will be posting a very special post on my birthday, Thursday March 9. It will put this poem much more in perspective and you will know me…much better too:) Thank you for saying that I touched you..that I touch my readers…really that is my greatest desire. Big hugs dear poet..thank you for continuing to enjoy my poetry and for being so incredibly you:) 🙏🌹🙏

“But when we close our eyes and just hold hands, we are those wild versions of ourselves”…true, with time the body changes…but the higher energy is the same…it would always remain that way…that’s why it still stays inside…it will always be…isn’t it beautiful?…this is a very delicate & lovely poem…the love, the passion, the shine, the longing, the sadness, those memories…you’ve expressed (your words & voice) it so beautifully that it’s impossible not to connect with the emotions…you’re an amazing storyteller, Karima ✨❤️💫

    • Ahh Navin, yes it is that way…when we conjure up those memories Time stops for us, and we are young once again. You say, “…it will always be…isn’t it beautiful?” Yes, it will..nostalgia is that sweet & sour feeling, of remembrance and reality, of dreams and the actuality of the moment. It is beautiful! Thank you for saying at the end, that I am an amazing storyteller.. That means a lot and this story, i really felt… needed telling. How you inspire with your words my friend 🌹

This is so lovely, and heartwrenching that I can’t express well in words. The lines…
But when we close our eyes
    and just hold hands
we are those wild versions of ourselves…
says it all. Memories are so strong that you can time travel. In the end, the way you have pieced together is fantastic. And your deep voice is just mesmerising. This is a masterpiece, one of the best poems of yours 😊💐💖🙏

    • Thank you so much Kaushal, and I already know from your wonderful writing, that you too are a nostalgic romantic. This is something we have in common. We might interact, love even live with people, who when it is over, do not inspire a poem or a poetic story. But the ones who stick in our minds and hearts..ahhh the least we can do…is tell their story. Thank you my friend..I am thrilled you felt this one so deeply and positively.

I agree, Karima, this much commonality we have. I also feel the way you do, but your expressions are much more intense and you hit the nail on the head with emotions. Thank you, Karima, for your kind words. Always welcome 😊💖

  15. I like a little line like this: “Did I ride the roan and you the bay /or was it more the other way.” Because it shows how we don’t fully remember the things correctly. It’s a very humanly line. So much to love here as always. Great scene setting, descriptions, and feeling!

    • Thanks a lot Ben…glad you liked it…even healthy brains lose those details.:) I find it so interesting to get together with someone who was in “the same scene” with us, and see how what is remembered can be widely different. Yes to err in recollection is very human..So glad you enjoyed the mood and sets..I think finding this music was so important in conveying the wistful nostalgia about how we age….Stay tuned on that subject…tomorrow I am posting a special post about that:)
