“Alien Orchid” by the artist Jan Betts signed March 1, 2024
*Jan Betts is my best friend in Costa Rica. She has known me since the 1970’s
starting in Hollywood and then we both landed in Costa Rica, just a few years apart.
She is one of my favorite artists and as soon as I saw this painting…I knew it would be a poem.
Alien Orchid
Warm pastels like an Easter resurrection
a subtle flame still lit but barely
an alien orchid comes to visit our world
in this time of death and despair
in this time when bleakness drains all color
her message in her over- flowing tears…
“Don’t lose hope.”
I have come from far and seen too much
But I am here to replenish the desert
of your soul and make it bloom.
In my world, growth is love and it saves
in your world, injustice kills and prevails
but even when your world looks like it will end
Don’t lose hope.
I am life in a dying moment,
and I am right on time.
Refresh and heal through my compassion
I cry with you and teach you that
your tears can make a change.
Like an open prayer, stop to breathe the air
Don’t lose hope.

“Alien Orchid” by the artist Jan Betts signed March 1, 2024 is beautiful. What a lovely prayer about the hope and the love that the Orchid brings. Just such a beautiful combination Karima. I particularly love these words: “I have come from far and seen too much
But I am here to replenish the desert
of your soul and make it bloom.
In my world, growth is love and it saves
in your world, injustice kills and prevails
but even when your world looks like it will end
Don’t lose hope.”
Filled with hope for our world which is hurting right now from lots of war and pain. This is such a hopeful, healing piece, thank you Karima and the wonderful artist as well. What a treat, thank you Karima. Love you so much Joni (Spreading love and hope with all your work)

And this unusual but beautiful painting of Jan’s spoke to me in this way..I’m so happy you felt the words did fit her amazing image. Thank you again for reading this and as always your comments and perception, I find so inspirational. Thank you dear friend..Much love to you always..❤️

Thank you Hoyt, although as you know, I slip into despair at times too, the way the world is and lose hope, but Alhamdulillah, I find it again, in paintings like this one of Jan’s
