In Honor of the Languid Angel.

On June 1st, I posted about an illustrious visitor that suddenly appeared in our yard,
an amazing, docile beautiful solitary creature, a two-toed sloth.
I was hesitant to post this sad update, but I was was moved to by the perfect poem that
was written for her/him by Swadharma9 who has the blog, “This Happened”
The sloth was baptized “Pablo” by Samreen’s son, who awaited pictures and movies of him every day. We suspected Pablo was a “she” but then decided on the non-binary name of La Pablo:) Moving from tree to tree they stayed in our yard almost three weeks.

I had prepared myself for loss, as they could leave just as they came, but every day our yard felt blessed to have them with us. When one gives their heart to a wild free animal, they can have it broken.
Last Saturday, the unthinkable happened, Pablo fell from a tall tree 35 meters, and within, two hours they were gone. They died on my bed, my cats very concerned, and they died peacefully.

We cried.. We all cried.. and I felt a deep sense of loss and wondering why?
Then the next day, I received this poem from Swadharma9 and my tears changed to understanding. Her words rang true and to share them all with you, I decided to make this post. Thank you, Joy, for finding the words, that were still lost to me.

to the one who fell to earth

languid angel in the tall green trees,
who lost her grip
& fell to earth,
thank you for your holy presence
that you gave to us
whose feet are firm
upon the ground.

you blessed us
for a timeless while
& now you make your way
to higher realms
that we cannot yet see,
welcomed warmly
back to formlessness,
as you began
before you blessed us
for a spell.

you left your traces in our hearts,
left your body,
left us all
but for the memory
of your brief enchanting life,
your sweet face
saying hello,
& then goodbye.

Sooo beautiful and healing.
I am grateful for the short time this angel graced our lives and our land.

So sad, touching, and beautiful. It makes me think of Unmindful; we all roll down the mountain, and eventually into that declivity, soul after soul…

  4. Oh Karima.. my heart is breaking for you with this incredible loss of Pablo. So adorable and sweet. I’m so sorry truly. I know what it’s like to take in a wild animal and love them so. My son rescued a sloth from dogs in Nicaragua a few years ago and adored it.
Sweet kitty love for safe crossing with Swadharma9’s beautiful poem take good care.

    • Ohhh Cindy, thank you for your sweet solidarity. They are such noble, gentle creatures and they can live to be 20 years old. We hoped he/she would stay with us as we have a large lot full of trees and fruit trees. How wonderful your son did that…They are very easy to adore.. Yes, kitty licked him in his last minutes…was really very moving. Oh yes Swadharma’s poem was like a healing for my very sad soul…it put it all into a larger perspective. We will miss our La Pablo but we are thankful, they passed our way for awhile.

It was but I was mad as a wet hen as I could Imagine the pack of dogs after him. 🤷‍♀️.
Awwww what a precious transition and what a sweet Kitty. I hope others will visit! 💕

  6. Thank you Cindy for your beautiful reflections on La Pablo..I think this sweet sloth was a gift in so many ways…and we gave him a peaceful passing too. We are hoping more will come and our planting some fast growing (10 meters in a year) trees they love. Inshallah more will feel attracted to our yard.

Truly heartbroken habeebity, we always saw him hanging on the trees, sometimes sleeping, sometimes climbing and that made us especially my son so happy. And to see him now sleeping forever is really painful. Like you said, La pablo was a blessing for a while. He/she made a special place in your heart within a brief period of time and also in our hearts living thousands miles away through his pictures and videos. La pablo was special. And like you have mentioned in above comment, InshaAllah we really would be awaiting more Pablo’s to lit your yard. ❤️❤️🤗🤗

    • Habeebity, your words touched my heart and I know you know. how wrapped up I got into just knowing he/she was still living with us..every day I would take movies and videos, and just seeing he/she high in the trees, feasting on leaves, in the perfect sloth element, made my heart soar. I loved getting your sons messages, “Auntie? How is Pablo?” and telling me, “Pablo needs toys” Awwww so precious.. Yes without having any idea, Pablo sparked the imagination of so many, who only saw videos and yet, loved him from afar. Thank you habeebity for opening your heart to them too. Big hugs and thank you!! InshAllah, another will find her way to us again.,,when we least expect it.🙏🌹

    • I feel sorry for little Anzar..maybe you could say he just was no longer with us..that’s not telling a lie..and just say that we can’t take any more pictures, as he is far away 🤗 Thank you habeebity for being a part of Pablo’s life..He touched people..from the tops of the trees, he touched us:)

Oh dear Karima, I needed a day to collect myself before I could comment on these sad news. Life is so very fragile and experiences like these remind us how precious all our encounters and loves are. The love we feel for another being is so fulfilling, but it makes us vulnerable. And yet, like you say, we’d do it all again. Because that’s what gives our lives meaning. Such wonderful words from Swadharma9 ❤

    Hugs, Joey

    • Thanks so much Joey..I know it was such an emotional happening and so sudden and unexpected/.//Supposedly sloths fall regularly from trees, high trees and yet, La Pablo fell badly and was not so lucky. Yes a few lessons were learned by this experience and yes all worth it to share those amazing three weeks with a fellow traveler, journeying through Life..just like us:) The poem just entered my soul..it felt right and it made me move from sadness to feeling extremely grateful for the blessing of knowing that sweet sloth. Hugs thank you for this comment 🤗

    • Thank you Kaushal…so unexpected and yet a deep learning experience about love and loss. We are planting more trees that sloths love, called Guarumos. they grow tall quickly and might be an extra incentive to check out our yard for future ones, to make their home with us…..for awhile. Yes, swadharma9’s poem was too beautiful…just the right thing to say… Thank you my friend.
