A White-Winged Angel

Maki & My Father & Me

Please listen to my spoken word to the beautiful music by Peter B.Helland”Feelings”
(My yiguirros..our National Bird, singing in the background)

A White-Winged Angel

A white-winged angel slips thru the trees
“Come for me  please come for me”
“You took my daddy away in his sleep
now please take me, now take me.”

At eleven we still don’t know too much…
We look to our parents to fill in the blanks
but when the father dies and the mother goes mute
We read Edgar Allan Poe until we think we know.

Here in Costa Rica, tomorrow is a solemn day…
Few people drive their cars, all industry shuts down
A quiet like before Time pervades through Nature’s  scene
and just breathing is a meditation on life and death.
Just sitting in the quiet is like a waking dream

My beloved Maki, my cat of destiny was killed on Good Friday
in March last year, with all my family here, I could not cry.
I was so in shock, my eyes stayed dry, and forever more
they refuse to cry, I took the pain of his loss, burying it deep inside.

A white-winged angel slips thru the trees
“Come for me  please come for me”
“You took my loving Maki away from me
now please take me, now take me.”

My father passed away the 18th of April, sixty-seven  years today
and yet that preteen trauma is embedded in my memory
It forged my life, from an early age; it changed me..
and I am who I am, a poet since that time,
who still looks at life and many times just asks why?

A white-winged angel slips through the trees
“Come for me  please come for me”
“You took my daddy away in his sleep
now please take me, now take me.”

My First Reading in Over a Year…Tomorrow!!

The Guests Will Click on The Poster to Get a Copy of My Poems

Pearl Astor Winchester (how I love her name) came out of the blue one day a few months back and contacted me. As she says in her welcome speech (and I am quoting her)

“I first discovered Karima quite serendipitously through Facebook. The moment I encountered her work, it felt like a lightning bolt—something stirred deeply within me. I had long envisioned a poetry reading here in the garden, but wasn’t sure where to begin. And then, there she was—a voice, a vision, a muse.”

I went to her gorgeous garden venue at “Pearlmoor Abbey” and was swept off my feet. Her fine love of detail and exquisite taste, her talent for decoration and color combinations..really It’s maybe the most beautiful venue I have ever read in!🌹 I got into my dress for tomorrow, a Mexican Spring gown, and took a few pictures.. What do you think?

Wish me luck..I will make a new post tomorrow and let you know what it was like. I am indebted to my hostess, Pearl Astor for inviting me to read…
This is why I love Second Life!!  Where else? could this happen? She is in Asia and I am in Costa Rica and with her guests, from everywhere… we will all be together tomorrow:)
“Thank you Sister…I can’t wait!!”
I will include two pictures Dale took at the reading. It was wonderful and everyone had a good time…even me.. I got over my stage fright and just enjoyed myself:) There were 28 people all spread out, from all over the world  listening and interacting after each poem.

And here is my handsome date:) Dale!!
Love this shot of him:) (foto by Pearl)
Wonderful shot of the gathering (foto by Pearl)
Love her details!!

Plans to do another one in the future are already in place:)

On and On……

                                                             Grieving Mother by nunmeister

On and On…

The War. The Greed. The Destruction. The Injustice,  now our daily bread.
If we’re not living these horrors ourselves every day in the flesh,
We are watching the scenes on TV.

Yet our world has turned its head and no longer sees.We can protest the rising prices, the governmental over reach,
but please do not forget a gentle people,  far away
being extinguished
before our eyes.

Raze the ground, uproot every olive tree
profits are the endgame; life is so cheap.
Human beings like you and me, being cleansed
to make room  for a real estate boom.

Profits before families…
ambitious cruelty sits on the Throne,
Careful now, you too could be on a list

to be classified as not worthy to live.

Hope is buried somewhere out of sight
and complicity to plans of insanity
are our new reality.

That’s One Big Iguana!!!

Shot This Morning on our Bird Feeder

It’s like having a small dinosaur living in our yard.
I think he probably hatched here many many years ago.
They live to be 12-15 years old and can live past 20 if they have a constant food supply
(Fruit trees) and high trees to shelter in….like we have here:)
Just sharing:) Here he is in action:)

The High Life- The Wildflower Witch Family 1968

Home Sweet Home on Santa Monica Blvd. Hollywood California 1967

Well it’s been awhile since I first mentioned MyRock ‘n Roll 60’s in Part 1 where I promised we were working on salvagaing a demo we did for Capitol Records in 1968. Part 1
Now in 2025 (and I really believe it was worth the wait) I can share with you our song.
It was pure Acid Rock and you can decide for yourselves if you think we were any good:):)
Turn it up and enjoy!! This is just the recording… not a movie.

It is a demo we made for Capitol Records in 1968.
It was  written by Dan Sverdlin our lead guitarist.
Vocals by Dennis D’Asuaro rhythm guitar and lead vocal
Tom Ryan, bass &  vocals
Donna Leviash (Karima Hoisan) electric organ & vocals
Bill Young drums & vocals
Recorded at Tower Studios on Hollywood Blvd.

Special thanks to Wave Mechanic, for restoration and mastering ©2025
and to Menubar Memorial for the collage of the group with lyrics and
thumbnail graphics.

Comments are very welcome.. Would love to know what you think:)

Lyrics:
“Nah nah nah na
Nah nah naaa
in a little dish”

I’m on the right side
of my own road
I can take you with me
do you want to go.
if I take you with me (lalalala)
Love you will know
The High Life
It is my Life.

No boundaries last forever
They’re only lines
The High Life has no borders
To be defined.
If you go with me
Life will stop being Time
My life
is the High Life.

Bridge:
(my solo 🙂
If you want to erase the lines
the altar is waiting, a love it provides
and you know that I’m on your side
With faith it will work out, so why don’t you try?

All freedom lasts forever
if you let it survive
But fear can lend no shelter
it can make freedom die

Die
Die
Die
(its all the same…it’s all the same…it’s all the same)

Solitaire Land

A Game of Solitaire

Playing solitaire
just killing time
as if time
were the enemy
feels like a crime
living my life
and killing time..

Red Queens go
on Black Kings
In solitaire
opposites attract.
Kings slide into
empty spaces
Aces reign on high
It’s just like that.

In this ordered world
we drop down
one by one
Red Tens
on Black Jacks
Black Fives
below
Red Sixes
Black Twos
Sing the Blues
while above
Red Threes
sing back-up harmonies….
etc etc; can you see?
There Is a plan
in the world
of solitaire land.

And so I find comfort,
a zombie enslaved,
to this mindless game,
waiting for the dinner-ding
on my microwave.

Black Four looks for the door
Red Three  stands tall on the floor
Queens keep showing up
when I least expect it
but with no one leaving the party,
no room to put a King.
Now the  Kings are stuck…

No Queens for them
to play with today!

And where are the Aces hiding?
Stuck in knee deep piles
No way to get them out.
Without them
my structures are wobbly
built on fragments
built on sand.
Use that Eight and
turn  the next over….

🙏

Oh please please please
may it be an Ace!…
to give my play foundation….
to give my solitaire a chance…
to enjoy the satisfaction
of moving Black on top of
Black ascending
Red on top of Red until …
Four neat piles
two Black Kings
next to
two Red Kings…..Presiding.

We won!!!

Dry-Eyed

                                                                    My Avatar on Kitely

Dry-eyed

When I lost you, I couldn’t cry.
Something very abnormal it seemed to me
the loss of you was like an iconic moment
to shed tear after tear..
and yet not one appeared.

Dry eyed, not a hint of glisten.
while I felt I would die inside.
I kept thinking maybe the perfect music,
memory, rain storm, would be the trigger
but my search was in vain,
not even your pictures, or hearing your name.

I worried a bit,
that I would make myself sicker
Everything I knew kept repeating,
if you don’t cry now
It will hit you like a head-on
next month…next year.

Like a speeding freight train
meeting me on the tracks,
standing there all dry-eyed
pretty sure not even death
could make me cry.

I waited for that moment
when I would least expect it..
all of a sudden the fact I would never see you again
would find its place,
and I would break down wherever I stood
and the tears would wash over my cheeks
and sobs of release,  that felt so good
after being pent-up a lifetime now…
would shake my foundation.

Instead I realized not only could I never cry
over the loss of you,
I stopped crying all together.
Your  death was so inconceivable
I stopped rotating with the planet.
I lived a lifetime and I never did cry
over you..I just never cried again,
over anything.
It was still a good life…
just dry-eyed, forevermore.

“Venice Midwestern” by Robin Saikia

Please click play to hear my spoken word of the poem to my original music

“Venice Midwestern” by Robin Saikia
Music and voice over by Karima Hoisan

She thought it would be magic:
the canals, the gondolas,
like a postcard’s laminated promise.

But here, the water smells —
a mix of fish guts and disinfectant,
and the breeze is damp, like the inside of a boot.

She wears her best smile,
but it’s like the air laughs at her.
Her map’s a soggy thing now,
crumpled in her hand —
so many alleys that curve back on themselves
like a joke she doesn’t get.
A gondola guy sings,
but it sounds more like a car alarm.

The buildings, sagging, tilted sideways,
look like they’re about to fall over—
but they don’t. They just stare,
vacant-eyed, like old men
who’ve seen too much,
or enough.

She had imagined romance,
but the gondola’s seat is sticky,
the water a murky green
that promises more than it delivers.
Her shoes are soaked,
and the pizza she ordered
is as flat as her hopes.

And Jim — poor Jim —
he’d whispered once, on the plane,
“Maybe this will ‘spark’ something, huh?”
But all that spark fizzled,
burned out by the damp, salty air.
The bed too small,
the sheets too heavy.
Venice, with its decaying beauty,
has made them tired,
the way a heavy meal makes you sleepy.
Her hand on Jim’s chest weighs as much as
that Murano paperweight.

They don’t talk about it —
sex, or the lack of it (or the paperweight) —
but the undeceived canals know it all
and echo it, in a customary ancient sigh.

She’ll write home:
“Venice was nice,”
but the word tastes sour,
like toothpaste in the back of her throat.
And who needs canals, really?
When you’ve got a truck in the driveway,
and Walmart.

And the soft ebb and flow of Jim snoring
to remind her
of what’s no longer there.

*Footnote: I was honored  when Robin requested me to read his poem to my music:)

Break is Over:) I Am Baaack!!

Hi my dear WP blogger family,
I Am Back.
I had my 78th birthday on Sunday March 9th and it was amazing. We went to the beach, where I first landed in Costa Rica in 1975 and relived memories, visiting old neighbors, people I have known for 50 years!!!  It’s Ramadan, so we ate food and cake after sunset,, It was really magical and my kids (haha 56 & 42) organized it all so well. Here is a little movie of my magical mystery tour, my daughter, Poett put together:) Who wears black socks to the beach? Haha I do, as I can not get sun on me for my autoimmune condition. Jan Betts my artist friend and best friend is sitting next to me (white hair) and Mariella (on my other side) is the first friend I ever made in Costa Rica…still lives in the same place in front of the beach  50 years later..

Then!!
Gino’s Fashion Show.. His models coming to life, walking the catwalk, Gino and James coming out at the end to wave to the audience… well it never happened that way. Because of resouces where this virtual fashion exhibit was being held (A Big Open Sim Fair) there was too much else going on for the models to walk the catwalk…But  there was a party..and I got to wear a Gino sketch turned into a darling outfit and look real life 18 again.. (dancing with my handsome vampire date, Dale Innis, we had a wonderful night, even with the catwalk glitch..)

Plus!!
We will put it all up on Gino’s Butterfly, right in the Bevery Hills Section. It Will work there, inshallah, because that sim is robust with good resources.. So then a new party and a new catwalk…In April:):)
So I made this movie…so you can watch us dancing the night away. Gino, “too sexy for this song” is at the end:)  Enjoy in 4K  and turn it up. The music is by Right Said Fred, “I’m Too Sexy”  Thanks again to Kimm Star for turning Gino’s sketches into gorgeous virtual clothes!!
and turning me into 18 year old Donna Leviash:):)

Ramadan Kareem & a Small Time Out

Ramadan Mubarak!! Ramadan Kareem!
May this be a blessed Ramadan for my fellow Muslims all over the world.
Many are celebrating under very harsh conditions and my heart and prayers go out to you all.
A special Ramadan wish for my beloved family in Jordan and the sons & daughters of Umahmad now all residing in the US.
I will use this special time to take a break from my blog.
I won’t be posting for the next 4 weeks
or reading regularly.
As Pooja says, it is good to take a break sometimes and I can’t imagine a better time than now.

Blessings to all,
Karima
