So Much To Blog….So Little Time

I guess I could start with the flood….
Saturday August 3rd, an unexpected hurricane, flooded the entire town of New Toulouse and left it reeling and wet under a bizarre winlit sky and ominous dark and brackish swampy water . I found myself, the night before the UWA Awards ceremony, staying up too late, floating on a piece of driftwood, hoping against hope I would be rescued.

wow

Wet!

jhjh

I almost fell asleep, which would have been a disaster….

Help came in the form of our brave Mayor Henri Godenot, driving his buggy through almost impassable streets. He had just rescued Miss Rhiananna, a neighbor, and came for me just in time, before I was swept down a drainage ditch.

gooo

Just in time…

We drove in the sometimes almost impassable water, the wheels bumping at times on the heads of totally submerged zombies, who were still (miraculously) in 100% Health. Oh those Zombies!!

Surreal

Surreal

When the water became too deep, our clever mayor switched to his intricate and beautiful hot-air balloon, which took us up out of danger, but at times, dropped us into it.

love it

“Mayor! Up! Up!”

floodshot_003

We picked up a blue-haired straggler along the way (Doug Donovan)

In the end, we flew safely above it all, looking down upon pigs huddling on porch- top
roofs, and at one moment, the Mayor went to check on his horses who were also gathered roof-top. Thank you Mayor for saving my life, and….it was fun too:)

Up and Away!!

Up and Away!!

Then we sailed off to dryer lands, until the flood receded.

So……
the next day was the UWA Awards Ceremony. I will give you the link here so you can see all the winners. Our movie, “Window on a Train” placed 7th out of 64 entries, which was a respectable showing, and I somehow won the audience participation prize (picking the top 10 closest to the judge’s list…although I was wrong about 1st Place *smiles)  The sim crashed and I was so immobilized with lag that I did not get a single picture of the event which was very well attended with 100 avatars present at one moment. I wish to thank all the judges and the organizers who worked so hard to make this event a big success. Here is the official blog on the winners:UWA blog

We were honored...

We were honored…

Then….. but going back a day..Natascha, as the Director, was invited to represent us at a Japanese Summer Film Fest. It was a great honor as our film was the only non-Japanese
 video to be awarded a prize there. They were very impressed with our collaboration and at one point asked her about it. This is what Nat said after they asked her if she would collaborate with others in the future,

“Natascha Randt: “I am not sure to collaborate with others. Because most filmmakers are loners:)
 The collab with Karima is very special, and from the first moment, we knew we could trust each other. She is the Vocalizer and I am the Visualizer. One day she wrote that, when I “painted” a scene, I give her the brush to see what she will paint on my picture. And that’s the secret of our collab. We both are open for the thoughts of the other and we discuss all the things and mostly we say “ok let’s see if it works” We don’t say “Here that is the best, and we do it so!”, we always say “look at this, what do you think?”
  I think our collab is a very special unique treasure, maybe it’s fate:) “

On Nat’s blog you can see a bit more about this event, and a short movie she took of it there. Her blog is in German, but that is why we love Google Translate:) Nat’s blog post

Now we are getting down to the last thing I want to add.
Well both Nat and I believe in our little film, and want to get it out to a wider audience, so we decided to make a version of it in Spanish. I did the voice over again in my own translation of my poem. It came out quite lyrical, and we are hoping that the Spanish-speaking audience will enjoy it too. Here it is below: Enjoy and thank you for all your encouragement and support on our machinimas. It means a lot to both of us, and is the reason we will continue to make them.

Thankful

...For the plants you never fail to water...

…for the plants you never fail to water...

Thankful

I thank you for the pasturing of my beast,
for the plants you never fail to water,
for your mind that flies beyond Time.

Do I do something to earn this grace,
or is it given freely in random generosity?
Every hair upon my head is a steel strand
now pulled to the dance by your fingers…
Ah, magnets on the sliding strings of a cello.

I thank you for the tears that salt my joy
for flying kites that rotate in slow motion at night,
for your heart that gives while it learns the art of giving.

All I did was open my eyes; could it really be that easy?
When I stop the world going around me, I feel it can.
For the poet, words and tears can come so quickly.
Only the muse knows the depth of my rambling and sobbing.

I thank you for being the wise, the perfect shade of quiet.
The screamers of the world, stop banging on my doors,
each time that you come in.

The Illusion of You

The

The illusion of you…

The Illusion of You

The illusion of you was a red- dawn sky after an all- night storm,
rose-tipped, filled with hope, looking for stability.
What you might have been, lapped at my feet
and there was a calm, you can’t deny it.
Oh, I felt it too…rising every day, my good fortune.
I went down on knees, on morning- tide to send a thank you.

The illusion of you, sometimes felt real, in the changing light,
a
fter those nets were put away, and you were quiet.
When I looked upon your shoulders, I saw soft beauty in my midnight.
Yes, I loved your contradictions, because I thought them mostly mine,
but it hurts like fire and ice today, a cold burn, that leaves a fever.
Too much truth, blew in too fast; how quickly clouds can scatter.

The Taming of Eve – Remembering La Reve

sss

“The Taming of Eve” by Lash Xevious (detail)

It’s sometimes hard to look back and decide just exactly what event or events were, what I refer to, as Life- changers…those markers on the highway, for those of us who do believe in destiny, that change the direction we thought we were going. Second Life most surely can be named as one of those for me, and in the first weeks of Second Life, this sculpture, by Lash Xevious, “The Taming of Eve” is very much another.
Is anyone reading this, who is old enough to remember Lash Xevious, and her impressive and unique sim ?  La Reve, where Lash poured out her pain, darkness and bursts of  joy that were her truth. She told us stories through her sculptures; her wild creativity touched with a stroke of insanity called out like a siren, captivating and bewitching anyone who visited those shores.

ssss

Me: “Please sell me this sculpture” Lash Xevious: “No, it’s not for sale!”

So I spent hours on her sim, La Reve, dreaming in her floating beds, worshiping at the feet of this sculpture, that spoke to me in a very powerful way. I saw it back in 2008 as a monument to abuse by the powerful over the weak. It affected me so much, that I changed my RL plans to travel that Spring, and stayed where I was, which ultimately changed my life totally. I wrote this poem for it too:

Taming of Eve
for Lash Xevious
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
eyes of coral red
blood pulsing to your head
arch your neck and battle me
with fangs erect .
I will not melt in fear
although clutched you hold me near
there is no one to battle you
I stand alone.
inside you smile and grin
for you think that you will win
but I taunt  your open mouth to say
” just swallow me”
submission you demand
tamed  by your coiled hand
now I crawl in servile poses
while I plot your kill.
Inspired by Lash Xevious’s
sculpture ” Taming of Eve”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now today, five years later, I see this sculpture in a new light, as compelling as ever,
but the message is very different. The title is “The Taming of Eve,” not The Death of Eve, so in 5 years, Life both RL and SL has added to my own process of taming. The snake is a powerful and hypnotic symbol, an inherently  fearful one for most human beings, but in this sculpture, I see better what the snake might represent:

He has her pinned, helpless bound.
She struggles,wrapped in coils.
There is something she must learn.
He is willing to let her down
unscathed unharmed, and wiser;
if she only stops her struggling
if she only stops her kicking
if she only stops resisting
He will let her go,
if only she surrenders.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Replace the word “He” for Life, and that is what this sculpture reminds me, it can also be.
Sometimes Life knows better than we do. If we surrender, and don’t fight it, it sets us free from the trapped place, we feel we are in.
Anyway, Lash Xevious, by the way, never became my friend. It was her path to not do that, and she never acknowledged, most Ims and notecards, poems, a machinima poem,
“Water and Glass” and even a small book I wrote. She was aloof to most everyone, but one day, when the sim was about to be closed, she Im’d me and said,”I am selling the Sculpture if you are interested.” So now, on my sim LINC island, I have a small sculpture garden, with 4 amazing pieces by her. It is a tiny bit of La Reve preserved, and I invite anyone, who remembers, or who never had the chance, to come see her work displayed in a very tranquil (and romantic) setting. Come take a look. My sim is public, and an extension of my creativity. It is where Nat and I make our movies above, and where music, beauty, Art and romance prevail (besides a little humor sprinkled here and there)
Come walk in the garden, remember or discover for the first time, the talent of Lash Xevious, a pioneer in full-sim installations. I leave you with a few more images and a poem I wrote for her way back then. Here is your taxi to visit: LINC Island Sculpture Garden
La Reve In Me
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
for Lash Xevious and her La Reve

Pulled into your darker place
cozy in commiseration, we share a pillow
rock hard.. so discomforting  for most.
Blues sing blues, fossilized building blocks
of everything in your world.
I saw you scissor- handed that day,
white cuffs cutting and creating
slashing it all away.

On your island
you live the metaphor,
high walled cliffs protect and serve
yet something always gets through
wanted or unwanted;
Life’s not a menu from which we choose.
Your dream in azure,
translucent shards,
cobalt glass…
Those little shacks held secrets
before you blew them away
and we used to feel your swoon
and did it too
right next to you.

Haunted we return
and bring witnesses,
roam those rocks.
There is absence of pain.
 The ruins allow gentle waves
to lap their columns,
a proud reminder of when it all fell down
it still turned into something….
maybe bruised
but not impossibly broken.

At the end of the sunlight
I float in your bed
catching your dreams.
Chess pieces
soulless  swine soldiers
tumble from the peak,
the aftershock can be felt
and everything that should now be stopped
keeps moving, in endless little tremors,
everything at once still in motion
somehow still as death.
It got as bad as it could get
and yet  human love survived here,
rebuilding….
honoring
the dream.
It became a comfortable nightmare
that you’ve learned to wear well
with style and elegance.

Rise in defeat Artist!
Take pen and brush
blow torch in hand,
with a vengeance
recreate it new.
Your titles,
subliminal war cries
your island,
the most intimate  you.

90% Transparent

90% Transparent

90% Transparent

I am only 90% transparent..so I leave a hazy shadow on the wall.
W
hen I fly across state borders or the ocean, I am just an almost- seen.

This is how I travel, deep inside your laptop, passing checkpoints, X-ray scanners,
not invisible but not quite visible is how I appear to the commonality.
The average eye easily passes me by, yet you can always see me.

I am a ricochet from my brain, traveling like a speeding bullet hour- per -hour.
Shot from the Id, that gun of passion, I never try to make attempts to explain,
how pure essence steals a ride aboard condensed intelligence.
I have been compressed to just 90%, so sometimes my edges give me away.

I am but a shine upon the nightstand, a glow, that hovers dimming, flutters,
mischievously I do reconnaissance from door to floor, then hang upon a picture frame.
I am smoke but I am touch, a tactile ghost who stays alive, breathing in your curiosity.
I seem to travel with you everywhere, turn off the lights on a Friday night and whisper,
“Are you there!”

I am just a voice, a see -through pane, perfecting my magic, innuendos and whispers.
The air quivers as I travel past; only a few would feel the subtle interactive 10% of me.
I might be not quite real, a consciousness arriving, presently watching from the attic.
Then when the room settles from the day; I’m in my lodging.
If you’d just lift the top, I could give you a kiss goodnight.

If You Thought You Had Everything….

I think I thought I had everything, until Natascha sent me a direct link to MarketPlace and told me “I had to get this,. I Had to!” Our director has a way with commands, as many of us have learned, so I considered it.  Well the price was right (0L) and it was in the very recognizable Torley Colors..so I obeyed her *smiles and made my purchase. Natascha was so happy I did, she tp’d down on me when I was afk, fasting in my hammock, and muscled her way into this picture.

You too can look like this. Are you tempted?

You too can look like this. Are you tempted? (Nat inside the avatar snapped this photo)

Flexi arms and an attitude. It comes in two sizes, one micro about the size of a newborn sand crab, and this bigger size.
Here are the details below. I am not getting a kick-back(a % of 0L:) but I see that SL has grown too big to know all on our own, what is out there. So just sharing what I learned today. Enjoy!
 Here is a short poem for Torley Linden
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oh Torley you taught me SLeverything I know.
I doubt I would have rezed a prim if I hadn’t seen your videos.
You seemed so gender- confused, but brilliant in pink and green.
I will wear your avatar, and may that brilliance never lose its’ sheen.”
Sci-Fi Moon-Cheese From Trash Productions!
This post is a small announcement about Nat’s latest film, one of her own original Trash Productions. It is her first Sci-Fi film and it will be in several parts. This is part one, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did..hence the reason for this posting. She re-vamped our train-set mountains and made a new set on my sim, LINC Island. I think she did a great job, and once again demonstrates, if you can think it up, you can probably do it in SL! Congrats Nat! I am sure seeing it in full-screen and HD will make you think you went on that trip with her:)
Enjoy!
Darkly
hhhh
Darkly
Darkly
A cold wind howls across my heart
This darkness is not warmed by fire
The chamber walls are narrowing
The air begins its umbral stifling.
There is no raven at the door
And Time so relative, seems faster
Only a vulture high and circling
His call rings out, unnerving.
Thoughts turn bleaker than this room
They slip into the shadowed halls
They slide down into cracks covertly
Then heart’s bad drummer stops abruptly.
Beyond mind’s dismal gloom appearing
Waits the dawn- break, head clouds thinning
My patient rhythmic sighs soothe whispering
As sun rises from its sleep, alluring.
