Blur…The Movie by Natascha Randt & Karima Hoisan

Do I always say that every movie I do with Natascha is my new favorite? Am I guilty of that “over-excitement” when we just finish a new project together and we are dancing in our creative after-glow? My only excuse is, that really, I do believe it is, and being so involved, it is hard to decide which is our “best film” as each one has been so very different from the other. If films are like giving birth, this one was our most difficult birth, maybe breach and almost two big for mom, but in the end, it was born joyfully. I am hoping Nat will make ample comments on her side, how she saw it all *smiles, but I can say for me personally, this was the film we talked more hours over before we even began it. Our brainstorming sessions went on for days and at any hour, because initially, there was a question that came up in some very good but heated comments as to what the poem was saying to begin with. See the original post and comments:
Click this link,
“Blur…The Poem”
So, what was it about..a girl? a cat?
Before we could begin deciding on scenes, we had to answer that question at least for ourselves.
I am going to refrain from saying too much more, and hope you will see the movie, and whatever comments it might inspire, share them with us here on my blog.
As we say on Nat’s YouTube Channel,
“It is a tale written out on Life’s highway. We focused on one story… and everyone knows some variation of it too. Thanks to all who helped out in the making of this, our most complicated film to date. Menubar Memorial’s RL highway footage, provided the speed we needed and is an invaluable part of the film.”
I want to extend a big thank-you to Menubar for this footage. Fate stepped in and just when he decided to go out one day and do some time-lapse filming of his town, not even knowing we were doing this project, he showed it to me one night, and the lights went off in my head. He offered it to Nat to use as much as she wanted, and really this moment of serendipity and good timing, helped us to see how we could tell our story in a dizzy and high-octane way.
A big thank- you to my co-star and co-owner of LINC Island where the movie was filmed on our “sky-lot,” Odracir Wrigglesworth. I hope he won’t be type-cast from now on and , girls, don’t be afraid to date him, he’s just a good actor… not a “real bad guy”
Thanks To RAG Randt who got me hitchhiking even though an avatar can’t hold out her thumb, he did a great work-around, and also to Dale Innis (our scripter in residence:) who came up with a way to blow that paper out of a moving car.
Last but not least, “Nat the Cat” frisky and adorable….ohh my, but what a sharp eye for angles, direction, editing, FX’s and set building. Always a joy to work with her, I hope there are many more opportunities to come.
So I present Blur, The Movie..Please see it in Fullscreen and in HD for the best quality and all comments are very appreciated. Enjoy!!

Karima Debuts @Black Dahlia ~ Thursday Jan. 24th ~ 1pm slt

Thursday at 1pmslt
As I have been saying, I just love a new venue..not new-new, but new for me as a poet, and on this coming Thursday at 1pmslt I will be reading for the first time at Black Dahlia.
Black Dahlia is owned and managed by Thor Monk and his very lovely partner Cailiee. Their Live Music venue hosts regularly some of SL’s most talented talent, starting with my good friend and amazing performer, Tukso Okey, to Jimmy Dukes, Sassy Nitely, Acousticenergy (James Olmos), Anek Fuchs, Joaquin Gustav, Jana Kyomoon, and Avantgarde Frequency, to name a few.
Thor decided to take a chance with me, his first live poetry event there, and I give him and his audience my word, I will give them my all at this debut.
I want to thank Padula Bing, Tukso’s manager and my friend,  for introducing us and making this possible, and I am hoping you will join me, this Thursday at 1pmslt.
Black Dahlia is  an open air, nature-themed environment that avoids any commercialization (you will not see shopping malls, ads etc ) Thor and Cailiee have told me their sim became a reality because of their love of music and the Arts. Two very good reasons to go and enjoy an hour of the spoken word, music and imagery!
Here is your zipline to the venue.
slurl for Black Dahlia
Look forward to seeing you all….

“Next Please…”

"..I invariably walk through don't you?

“..I invariably walk through… don’t you?

Please click on the .mp3 link below in bold to listen to this poem recited to my original musical composition. This is more of a performance piece, than a “read-it-to-yourself” poem.
Don’t even ask, where this thought came from…as I am not sure myself. I guess maybe from noticing some pretty open doors along the way, is my best theory. This is a little experiment in styles… and I hope you enjoy it.
“Next Please…”performed by Karima.mp3

Next Please…

When I see an open door along my moving timeline …
I invariably walk through… don’t you?

When I’m working on the assembly line of plastic plates, I don’t hesitate
to pick up that stray gold bar that somehow got through.
I remember from my school days what they would say,
Practice makes perfect..but I’m  just about ready to move on
Next please…

How many times can you love the wrong man,
and go through that lesson again?
Seriously… why are some lessons so hard to understand?
If I accept that the school of life is working me towards graduation
moving me along the course that will make my time worthwhile,
and that in repetition land is where I’m going to finally get it right…
I should see a little progress you would think
I know I Know…
Practice makes perfect, but you see I’m just about ready to move on.
Next please…

This crash -course feels like it’s trying to make me come to
my senses.
I’ve had this old lesson pounded into me until it’s glue,
so I want to refresh myself…and take a small sabbatical from my education.
I’m going to take a ferry ride in my free time, and watch the seagulls soar and dive.
I think that what I’m saying is, that I’m liking to be friends with you.
I don’t want to make it more, or meet you down the hill, or in a hotel room.
I don’t need to know how much you earn, or if you like dogs, or even what you do.
Those little details are up to you, but I’ve opened up another book,
and it’s feeling sort of new,

I just want to be loving friends with you.

Recap of The Poetry Reading on Creation’s For Parkinson’s Jan.9th

The forces behind Second life, had been acting up for days before I was scheduled to read on Wednesday the 9th. LL had somehow put a new variation on crashing and instead of entire sims going down from over crowding, the new thing was to see the selective wipe- out of maybe 1/2 of the avatars or 3/4 of the population at a gathering, on a sim at any given time. What is that all about? I was on one sim after my reading where they all swore they saw a “griefer” but I had already seen this happen on a few, so knew it wasn’t a big rash of “griefers” marauding over the grid for the new year.
Barbie had prepared a beautiful venue, but even the best laid plans can not compete with the fickle capriciousness of an unstable grid, which it seems to me SL has been suffering, for the last three or four days.

It was a  nice beginning, and looked like it would be a good attendance,( 33) as people began to stroll in, but by the 2nd poem, I heard that dreaded ding and looking up saw I had been logged out. You never knows if the whole sim went down or just you, so there is that moment of indecision, knowing that the stream is still up and alive, should I keep reading for probably nobody, or just stop and call it some very bad luck? I listened to my instincts, that said finally keep going, and good thing too, because about 6 or 7 strong willed avatars never crashed, and just watched everyone else around them , including myself, go down.
My main photographer, Nat, crashed too and a few times at that, so the pictures were only taken before the reading started. I will include a few and then if anyone would like to hear the recording of the reading I will include that below. Even with the crashing, and the chaos,(Maria couldn’t get the image board to respond when she came back) I think those who made it back in, really enjoyed it…and so did I. I want to thank all my loyal supporters (you really are SOOO loyal) I know many had to relog back in several times, and even with that, almost all the group stayed to the end.I also want to thank you for the generosity I witnessed through out my reading by all of you who donated so freely and willingly to the  cause of Parkinson’s Research. I would also like to correct an error on my previous post. 100% of the money raised in donations goes to Parkinson’s Research It made my heart swell…in the good way:)
All in all it was a challenging but also beautiful time, that we shared. Thank you all for being there, and for continuing to enjoy my poetry.

A beautiful setting on a beautiful sim. LL was the party-pooper

I tuned pale and the blood rushed from my head. Probably just about when LL was profiling me to be the next crash victim.

Karima Debuts at Creations For Parkinson’s: Where Life Begins Again ~ Wed. Jan. 9th 1pmslt

Poetry Park at Creations for Parkinson's

Poetry Park at Creations for Parkinson’s

For me, it is always a special experience to do a reading in a place I have never read before. I guess you might say, I am sort of choosey where I read, as I only do, at most two readings a month. I have been looking forward to this one, since we first talked about it in Fall of 2012. It’s because I hold this sim and the project in general, and the people who run and it and inject their time and love into it, in the highest esteem, that I agreed.
Barbie Alchemi and her mother Fran are the visionaries who have made this dream into a reality. I want to point you to a very well written article that came out this month in “Best of SL Magazine Jan. 2013.
Written with sensitivity and lots of information by Sonicity Fitzroy, with beautiful photos of the whole sim by Bonny Greenwood, it can give you a much clearer idea on what this sim stands for, and means to all who have this debilitating disease, or are caregivers for someone who does. Please clic this link in bold and turn to page 76. Creations for Parkinson’s in Best of SL Magazine Jan. 2013.  I think it is well worth the time, and for all who are avid Slers, I promise it will make you feel proud of our world. This sim is affiliated with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, and in only seven months has raised over $4500.00 for their cause
When SL is utilized for projects like this one, it is being used in the best possible of ways, to bring, relief, community, opportunity for creativity and optimism, which can amount to in many cases, a brand new life to those who felt theirs had been taken away with the diagnosis.
My dear friend and mentor-muse Architect DB Bailey, who has Parkinson’s disease, is very much involved here and his latest installation,” Compulsive Creativity” that Natascha captured so well in her movie “Advice To A Flower flies high overhead
Wed. Jan 9th at 1pmslt will be my debut in their beautiful amphitheater that Barbie says, “…was built just for me. ” I may be the first, but I know that this beautiful venue will host some of the best poets in SL, and I am proud to “break ground” so to speak, with my reading this Wednesday.
Please join me in this lovely setting. As always I will give you the best of my heart, and words and music. I have a few never- done- in -public before and a very special poem I composed the music for, by RoseDrop Rust. So…grab  a carriage- ride here, and I will look forward to seeing you there. Since half of what the sim receives in donations, goes directly to Parkinson’s Research, please be generous with the venue, and I forgo any personal tips that day, to also contribute to keeping this lovely dream a reality.

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 10,000 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 17 years to get that many views.

If You Like Us…LIKE Us!! ….please…

Oh, I apologize before I  even begin here, as I never thought I would see the day I would be campaigning for Facebook Likes….but here I am..doing just that!! I actually do it more for Natascha, my talented film partner, who like everyone does like to win, but unlike everyone, really deserves to. This is her visual magic in the film, I am the sound person, and together we are a team:) As I mentioned in my last post, Nat and I entered a Film contest, knowing  ahead of time, the results would be not from a careful deliberation of a panel of qualified judges, but from a final tally of how many “Likes” could be produced by people with Facebook accounts. Neither Nat nor I are Facebookers, although I have a page now, basically made so I could see other’s pages. Nat doesn’t even have one, so our total number of Facebook friends is a whopping 45!!
We believe we have a competitive film, that complies with all the ground rules, and now we just need to campaign some votes, so we don’t lose too miserably. We have no illusions that we can win, now that it is a Facebook popularity contest, but we feel that we tried our best to produce a scary imaginative film.
Sooo…if you have a few minutes of extra time, I would like to ask my loyal readers to go to this page if you have Facebook and see our film along with the others (ours is the third one down), and if you like us….well LIKE us please MadPea Carneval Like page

No matter what the outcome, Nat and I will continue to join creative forces to hopefully keep entertaining you…but it is always nice to know that we  were “Liked” 🙂

“Where Are You??” Nightmare At The Carneval ~ a MadPea Machinima Contest

So, I was not thinking of ever being part of a project like this, when Spiral Silverstar (Joe Zazulak) sent a couple of pictures he had taken of me, as I unawarely strolled around the bizarre and surreal “Carneval,” put on by MadPea in Second Life.

A Scary Carneval

A Scary Carneval

Dark and ingenious, Carneval is an artistic collaboration of many of the best artists and builders in Second Life, see article on “Who Built What?”

Madpea..gone mad..

MadPea..gone mad..

One thing I did feel as I walked from one forboding ride to the next, was that I absolutely had to come back with Natascha Randt, (“The Visualizer”) who has that special eye to take it all in, and has chosen me as her partner (“The Vocalizer”) in a growing number of machinima collaborations. Still, it took a little push from my friend Rag Randt (no he’s not related to Natascha:) one of the gifted artists there, to give us a heads-up that there was to be a contest.

30 secs to 90 secs in length

30 secs to 90 secs in length

The good news is, Nat and I did it again! This is our 8th  machinima together, the prolific video team of Randt & Hoisan, and what you will see below is our entry to the contest, whose deadline was extended to Dec. 28th, so if there are any machinima artists reading this, there is still time to film yours.
This is ours.
They asked for a nightmare….we gave them a Nightmare“Where Are You?”
